scratches on windscreen

Hi all,

Is there a way to fix up scratches on windscreens? I guess it's not as simple as fixing up scratches on CDs :P

The scratches are on the passenger side, that's prob why I got through pink slip for rego.

Thanks,
Ron

You can have them polished out.

However you might find if they are bad that its cheaper to replace the screen.

^^^
What daz said, especially as this is for your 74L isn't it, so the glass your losing isn't exactly rare or expensive.

To have a go at polishing them out, the polishing medium used in the trade is cerium oxide.

A lot of glass/windscreen places can "fill" scratches so they disappear.

Sorry guys , right about one of the polishes but not the rest! Only very minor scuffs can be polished down , sometimes they almost disappear but not always. Using a mop can do alot more damage than good if you don't know what your doing. Get it wrong and you can scratch the whole area badly and even burn or brown the glass. Wiper marks etc are far too deep and to try and cut that much glass back causes major distortion. Save yourself alot of time and hassle and just buy a new screen and replace the seal if it's perished at all. Hope that helps you.

yes i agree with Danny

Replace the screen is the only way to fix scratches.

Ive tried to find places to Polish the blemishes but no place ive talked to wants to get involved,

If your passing through the cruise-in on Sunday (weather permitting) or your passing Mascot pop in , ask for me and i'll sort some polish out for you. You didn't say how bad they were so it might help but i doudt it.

modulus: yes, it's for my 74L bug :D

the reason why i'm asking is because i'm planning to get my bug resprayed and change all the rubbers later during the year, and i was just wondering if the windscreen is worth fixing, if not, i'll just get it replaced all together...

dannyboy67: I'm post some pics later to show how bad the scratches are.

the last i heard vvds has a few of them in stock as well...

Thanks all!

Where in Sydney are you? If you like when your ready i'm happy to help with the removal and refit of the glass. The going rate for a fellow dubber is a six pack of Corona !

I'm around top ryde or lindfield usually, but me and corona can travel :D
last time i did the removal and refit i discovered rust and swear words i never knew previously.... also the glass is pretty badly cracked so we may have to up the fee to include a dangerously fast ride in the car of death :D do you use silicone nozzles and string to help with pulling the rubber into place??

Most screens fitted for most cars are $185 and sometimes as low as $170 fitted.
If they are charging anymore than $185 you must have a very new model or rarer European vehicle.

It is still up to the buyer to make sure the fitter knows what they are doing. Like all industries there are good tradesmen and average tradesmen.

If a friend got one done by someone and was happy, see if you can get the same fitter. Hopefully he is on a good day.

Me thinks you are gonna be swamped with VW jobs. :)

Peter

Make sure you do a good kjob by buying a new screen rubber as well. there only $40.00 or so and the screen wont leak, no silicone needed.
