The 009 distributor was produced as a low-cost distributor for VW engines running at fixed or steady speed, such as generator engines.
It differs from the standard distributors in that it does not take account of the vacuum state of the inlet to set advance dynamically, but only the
engine speed.
With some dual carburetor setups (like twin Kadrons, Dellortos or Webbers) it is difficult to get a clean, reliable vacuum signal and the adjustment
that the standard distributor makes for vacuum can be too hit and miss; this is worse still with long duration camshaft profiles.
Thus when tuners have modified their VWs, they have been forced to use the 009 (or the 050 without vacuum advance); this has subsequently been
misinterpreted as the 009 being a "go-fast" bit itself.
In summary, the 009 doesn't have 'advantages' per se, but with modified engines there are circumstances in which it is a necessary
fix.

The advance curve for the 009 is supposedly quite steep so after the initial hesitation or flat spot which can often occur (but can be related to carb
jetting as well), it kicks in and therefore can give a false interpretation of power. Hence the tag of "performance" distributor. Do a
search in the type4rum on shoptalkforums.com for some info on 009's. Not much praise fraid to say.

The VW shops sell the 009 as a cheap alternative to the Vacuum advance as they are hard to find & very expensive...
A good Vacuum advance dizzy is the way to go...
You get better MPG & Performance from a Vacuum advanced Dizzy.
[from the sermons of Bob Hoover..]
But You should still go for an electronic ignition system so You don't have to replace or tune Your points all the time..
this is a Must...
