floor pan beetle

I am trying to weld a new floor pan into a beetle chassis (body off) and are experiencing difficulties along the tunnel edge of the pan. I am using an oxy set with an 8 mm tip. There is about 1mm gap between the edge of the pan and where the tunnel folds up. The edge of the pan burns away before the lip gets hot enough to be molten probably becsue it is thicker steel than the pan. Any suggestions? I know a mig welder would makke it easier but I dont have one of these and beleive it should be able to be done with an oxy
Cheers Nicko
