GEAR RATIOS
My 1970 baja has been converted to IRS abs is useing a bug or type 3 transaxle. My problem is that with 235/75 R 15's on the back it just runs out of
go the highway and hills. Also 1st gear is too tall for off road use. Is it possible to change the ring and pinion with one from an older kombie or
should i look at putting a 1600 bus box into it. I want to put some 10R 15 x 31 tyres on the back to get a bit more clearance under it but need to fix
the gearing first.

It will work out cheaper to put a Kombi Transmission in it. I suggest a 3 rib which is a 1600 Kombo Tranmission. With a 1600 engine and 31 x 10 .5's
it will be spot on.
Custom Offroad do a great kit and can also arrange fitting whilst the body is still on. Once you have it fitted you can pick up 1600 kombi box's
pretty cheap.
Stuffing around with the Beetle box is a waste of time and money as it is weak even if you do get the ratio's sorted.
Go Kombi Transmission and you won't look back. Oh and the kit from COR also includes front and rear straps

not wanting to hijack or anything:thumb but for my next baja i'm gonna use a fairly stock 1600 or so and i was wondering what would be the best Kombi
box to go with? 1600, 1800 or 2Lt? I want something that's strong and reliable. |

Thanks Brad I thought that might be the case, hopefully when my bus sells i'll have some spare cash to start playing with the baja. Is the kit easy
to fit? I can weld an cut so I'm willing to have a go.
What about the axles? what modifications are needed there?

Boozer - You want a 1600 kombi box
ibmok - mm they are pretty easy to fit. You machine the axles down a little. We have a guy in the club who does em for $25 an axle which is a very
good price. Other sare charging $75 per axle.
