Custom Plates

I always thought that personalised plates were a bit wankerish, however just secured the plate VW2CAB in NSW. Even fits the colour scheme (refer my Avatar)..
Anycase.. too late now, I've done it.. I notice when I booked it that the cost was $400 annually.. However they only billed me $50.00 on-line.. Does that mean I pay the rest when I pick it up... Or when I re-register?.. Not sure.. Has anyone else been dumb enough to do it?
Cheers

Wasn't mine.. The big banana has only just come out of the booth in Bondi..
BTW.. I have just committed $600 circa to All Metal Bumpers.. Front and back are going to be triple chromed.. That will finish it off nicely.. These guys have an excellent reputation.. i guess I will be able to endorse their work in about two weeks..

My wife purchased custom plates years ago for about $400 (i think) at the time it was different prices depending upon what you wanted. maximum price was around the $500 mark. the system used to be that you paid up front and then they told you when the plates arrived and at what depot to pick them up from. They had to be placed on the car immediately and the transfers etc all done. now you can purchase the plates and hold them yourself (apparently saves the depots having to hold and store the plates for you). for a fee of $50 i think you could get the colour changed, or if they were damaged in an accident they would be remade for free.
now if you get the colour changed or made into slimline you keep the original plates and dont hand them in.(if you hand them in to be destroyed they cancel the registration). so potentially you could have about 10 copies of your plates laying around the house.
below is my wifes plates on her pride and joy.....

I think mine cost $350 and no annual fee. they sot more if you have less characters...slim line is the same price as fat. Vicroads post them to you and you ring them to notify that you have fitted them and you "promise that you will destroy the old plates...I sent the oldie to my German mate who drove it to cairns and back...he loved the souvenir..the other is on me garage wall with lots of other useless decoration..

Unfortunatley these number plates are all in Victoria and we(NSW) have a very different way of getting ripped off by the RTA. I thought that there was a figure of about $1700 upfront and then the $400 annually. I do know that now when you order any type of personalised plate and/or request certain characters that you pay $100 annually. This includes requesting something in the yellow/black, euro and white/black.

I only know these details because late last year i had one plate stolen off my car. When i got it remaid they tried to charge me this new fee, but the plate was already in existance. By the way when you loose or get stolen one plate, you have to hand the other one back in and buy interim plates while the new ones are being made. It such a crock of $***.

So to answer your question, yes you will be paying the remander at the RTA when you pay for rego.

Yup, you have to pay annual fees for ALL custom plates in NSW now...

Should've bought mine last year...

That NSW system sux badly.

We have custom VIC plates on three cars and they were $295 and up to $350 for the last one. They were sent by post and arrived in the mailbox.

The paperwork said the price included one transfer to a vehicle to the new original owner (me). If they were not put on a vehicle, and sold to someone else, the transfer fee was $70, which was also applicable if I changed vehicles more than once.

Prices may have varied slightly, but the system is the same.

The plate is yours, but the right to display it always remains a privelege that is controlled by Vicroads.

Also on that. A friend of mine got a replacement plate a couple of weeks ago because one of his was damaged in an accident. They posted a new one with no asking for the old one or anything?

NSW RTA rules hav changed as of the end of 2003. im lucky i bought my VWF.00L plates b4 this, as they were 170 one off payment, now u would pay for them anually like a custom plate. thats such a rip off. i was going to get euro plates but now it doesnt seem worth it, paying for it annually plus a big initial fee.
check the rta website, they hav all the pricing on there. coloured plates make it even more exzpensive. you would think wuith the massive increase in custom plates on all the hotted up cars in recent years that they would not need to raise the prices that much, its incredible how much the NSW RTA rip u off.

Hi

So I wonder what would happen if you painted your existing premium NSW plates the same colour as the RTA does without paying fees. I got my plates for my 21st, many years ago.
