HOWTO: Attaching pictures using your own web space
Aussieveedubbers offers free 90 day storage of images less than 50 kb in size. If you want to keep a permanent avatar or put in bigger pictures, you
need to use your own web space.
Here is how you can activate your own web space from your ISP. If your ISP is not listed, U2U me, and I'll find out and update this page.
OptusNet
Optus include 5 MB of free webspace with all of their accounts.
There are no excess usage fees at the time of writing. See the caveat below!
iPrimus
iPrimus provide 10 MB of free webspace to most of its members. You should check your plan to see if you have access to this space, and how much space
you have.
WARNING: BigPond charge excess usage fees for this service! If you think you are going to have a lot of visitors (particularly for things like
major events or "interesting" images), be aware that Telstra will charge you 13c/MB after just 100 MB of downloads on the lowest plan. This could
add up to **hundreds of dollars a month** if you have very popular images. Keep an eye on your account's usage!
Caveats
Aussieveedubbers do not take ANY responsibility for usage charges incurred for your use of your ISP's web space!
At the time of writing (2/4/2004), the above details are correct. ISPs are NOTORIOUS for frequently changing plans. You must monitor your
usage and any excess usage charges your ISP has levied you. Aussieveedubbers cannot do this for you.
If your ISP has changed their plans, please U2U me and I'll change the details on this page.
In all cases, you should still resize your images to be about 640x480 in size or no more than 50 kB as many members are on modem and really hate long
page load times.
Avatars should be no more than 100x100 pixels in size, and this equates to less than 10 kB in size. Any link to external avatars over that size will
be removed from your profile.
