My brake dilema that wasn't brakes!!!!!
Firstly thanks for all the advise i have got re my brakes. Learned alot!
However also one hell of alot of expensive lessons learn't.
I took rims off for painting and refitted them using 6" widened standard rears which i got 2nd hand. The brakes were not 100% before though still
pretty damn good. However i had a BIG problem. The brake pedal bobbed up and down like a jack hammer when pressed and the car felt like it was driving
over logs.
After alot of advise i was told that i had overtightened the wheel nuts whcih suprised me as i didn't crack them up mega tight , never have but
listened to those that know. It looked like i had distorted the drums . So $300 later i replaced the fronts , a little better but still driving over
logs. Rats or words to that affect.
Okay so tonight after i had eventually saved enough i changed the rear drums and pads even though i didn't really need them, another $300!!! .
Again doing everything by the book etc etc. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh still the same!!! Double rats or stronger words to that affect. We fully checked
the whole brake system from end to end and everything is either new or 100% .
I remembered that this really only started after a show and a very steep hill and alot of folk said i had cooked the drums! After the scratching of
many heads the only change to my bug was bolting on the rear rims so when i got back from the garage i put my standard rims back on.
Hey freakin presto my car stops on a dime!!!! No driving over logs. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Double Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have just spent $600 i don't have and the plans i had for the car for the Nats are long gone , i'm sooooooo peed off !!!
So for all those that give advise this is another possibility to add to having a pogo brake pedal along with worn drums , overtightening , too much
heat etc etc. ! Obviously if the wheel is not true this is what happens. Even bolted the widened ones back on to check and again driving over logs.
Now normally i'd hunt down the dog that sold them me and have a quiet word. However the seller is a really nice guy , well respected and alot bigger
than me! I doudt very much that he would have known about the rim (s) being knackered and this post isn't a poke at the seller , not at all.
Now always trying to look on the bright side this is what i've come up with.............
I now know how to change front and rear drums on my 67
I had the chance to spend many hours under my car , checking , cleaning etc and it's never been welded or stuffed about at all.
I will not have to worry about brakes for a long time
I have been awarded many fly by points on my C/C.
I'll be able to drive to the Nats , yippie!
I know there are up's and downs with buying 2nd hand parts ( as seen in another post) so just be careful and save yourselfs alot of time and money.

Hi
I didnt get the impression from your original post that you had fitted new wheels you said "I have changed wheels recently for painting etc" Are
the wheel 14 inch by any chance? If they are when the centre is cutdown the centre will become less flexible and will bend the brake drum.

No all did was take off the original rims off, paint 2 of the standard 5 bolt 15x4 rims (front) and bolted on the Standard (widened to 6") 15x6
fresh painted ones i bought. That make sense? I also changed the tyres before hand and was there when a good mate of mine put the new tyres on so i
know it was done properly and not rushed or dropped etc.
Mate balancing wouldn't do jack , i had them balanced already , though some soil and a few plants would and i'll have something very different to
put on my balcony. Thanks thanks for the advise anyway You have to smile

Hi
It makes sense now that you said what you did. I’m sure someone would have suggested trying the original wheels to see if that helped.
Those wheels are definitely faulty you should be able to return them, maybe its only one of them, you might only need to return one. Another common
thing that was done in the old days was to machine the brake drum with the wheel attached and tightened properly but the way you describe your
pulsating pedal there would have not much drum left in the end.

The reason for the post was that no-one had thought or suggested that it may be a rim , learning for all of us , even the clever ones out there. It
was just the one of them i think but i'm saving for some Centerlines already ! Yes i'm pissed about it but as i said at least i have new brakes now
and thats one less worry for a while.
