Damn fires again, hope everyone is ok.
That time of the year again and hope all AussieVeedubbers around Sydney are safe and well after today's fires. Here's a few snaps I took
driving home from work this arvo (Nth Ryde to Blacktown). Last pic was from our doorstep and the fires were a fair distance away so you can imagine
how massive they must have been if you were right there.

and from our doorstep...

Lake Macquaire - Hunter NSW
Things were pretty sreious here last week with the whole Western side of Lake Macquarie declared a Disaster Area. A fire started by Arsoles, no I mean
ant dicks; hang on let me get this right - Arsonsists, anyhow started at Barnsley and moved like a freight train south jumping roads, rail, creeks and
containment lines.
Fortunately the rains shown in the ''Mud Fun" post helped the firies put the bulk of it our not before it took out a few houses, cut
power to 10,000+ homes and buisnesses for two days and blackened out 1000's of hectares of bushland.
Today another fire srated at Barnsley again, about three blocks from my inlaws and blocked one of the three western main arterial roads in Newcastle
for three hours. Little Bastards!
But it's not only the antdicks to blame. The firies were at the shopping centre a few months ago showing off how red there engine, they call it a
pump, is and when I asked them why arn't they out there fuel burning to prevent fires like last summers they replied that they are not allowed
to. I asked why and they said the EPA - Enviromental Protection Agency won't allow them the permits because "it (Burning) will adversly
affect NSW's urban clean air policies".
Sitting here boiling my ass off at midnight, can't get to sleep and I can smell smoke. I have been able to smell smoke for the last two weeks
except for the two days of rain when we had north-easterlies. How much clean air do we have at the moment EPA?
By backburning areas of significant fuel load you not only save 1000's of person hours fighting fires but you might just save a house or two, or
even a life. But hey, there just volunteers, it dosen't cost anything and we get clean air all winter.
Wankers!

yikes. Nasty situation.
I can identify with the whole burnoff / clean air thing. Every time CALM (Conservation And Land Management) burn off south of perth where it needs it,
people in Perth get all uppity because of a bit of smoke. They've obviously never seen or been near a real bushfire. Otherwise they would realise
how important it is to do these fuel reduction burns.
As for the firies - I'm a member of the Volunteer emergency response team at the BP oil refinery in perth that I work at. I have nothing but
respect for the majority of the bush firies - at least if we have a fire we have all the water in the world (courtesy of 3 huge (ie over 100kl per
minute) fire pumps and sea water), and the largest foam stocks in W.A. Plus we get good access to 99% of the refinery, we can get to the fire within 5
minutes of it starting, and if it gets too huge to handle, we just evacuate everyone and let it burn to the ground. Build another refinery later. Cant
really do that with bushfires when there are people involved.
I rate arsonists (ant dicks ) at about a step below common bloody thieves
and vandals.

Yeah it really pisses me off. We had massive fires here in the Dandenongs, a few years back, one of my friends lost his home, and those fires are
believed to have been deliberately lit.
All this late rain we've been getting in Melbourne just makes me even more worried that this summer, is going to have perfect conditions for
bushfires. |

Had been wondering if any of the Sydney/NSW Vee Dubbers were being affected by the fires
It's far better to burn off. How much less smoke do you get from doing that. Just look at the smoke in those pics, way worse than burning off and
so much more damage.
Had to go hundreds of km around fires in Northern NSW a few years back when heading to Qld. The sky was so red at night, very eerie
You guys up there seem to get it bad nearly every year. Take care |

Hah thought someone would comment about the photos taken while driving, first couple were stationary waiting for lights to changes, last few were
pulled over and stopped, one to two in the middle were from the brake-down lane and the one going into the tunnel and one other...well....wasn't

Should have seen it from the air
I was taking off in the dusk tonight towards the sea. As we banked over the Royal National Park, the smoke was causing the sunlight to go red, and you
could see all the fires in the south and south west of Sydney together.
Awesome view, shame about the reality for the poor sods on the ground. Apparently one of them was lit by an 18 year old arsonist and has caused one
death and $1.5m in damage. I hope he spends a bit of time in jail.

An Email from Ian Bentley as like mine (Now were with craptusnet) his browser is playing up and he can't get into AVD. He asked me to post this
here but I know stewart and I think he deserves a seperate post of his own as he's not only a top bloke, a avid buggier but one of the easiest
blokes to get along with I've met in New South Wales.
Thinking about ya mate.
Bronze
Any chance you could post this for me on vee dubbers under that "Damn fires again" in general chit chat. My stupid machine is playing up but
mail seems to be okay.
It may interest some of you to know that one of our number is a volunteer, he's probably not the only one but he is the only one I know
personally. His name is Stuart, he owns a Manx and for many years he has been a member of our local brigade in Beacon Hill in Sydney.
For the last month and a half, while I have been out playing with my toy up at Stockton & Fraser, Stu has been flat out with his brigade buddies
in Tenterfield, Hunter Valley & most recently on the northern outskirts of Sydney doing his 12 hour shifts, helping save homes and standing in the
front line alongside his buddies.
As I wake this morning to the acrid stench of a city covered in smoke, I'm filled with a sense of inadequacy at the thought of those thousands of
other volunteers like Stu who willingly make these sacrifices for our benefit.
I called him yesterday to see how he was coping, he wasn't at home and when I did get a hold of him, it turned out that he was at the brigade. It
was not his shift but he was there anyway, he had no complaints and seemed to just be happy to de doing his bit.
I blundered may way through a personal thank you for the work he's been doing and his immediate reply was that he would pass on the thanks to all
the others at the brigade. That reply is at the core of why do what they do, no one is an island.
Stu would be the first to tell you that he is just an average Joe and he just does this because he thinks it's the right thing to do and I;m
thankful that there are so many more like him out there.
Stu is due to fly over to NZ on Monday to attend the wedding of a Kiwi mate (same guy who sold him the Manx), I only hope he can take the kind of
break he deserves,
Thanks again Stu
Ian
Three Cheers!

Hi
We live across the river from Illawong and watched the fires the other night burning about 150 metres away on the other side of the water. So no use
being a hero, packed my bug with important papers, photos, videos, PC etc and left it on Daves front lawn, thanks Dave. My missus reckons I was nuts,
she said if it burns you can buy another 72 bug and do it up again, so i pointed out to her that we can go to any Toyota dealer and replace her Prado.
I think she dosen't realize how much money I have spent on my bug, the paint alone would cost $9,000 now to do.
I hope everone else survived OK.

1302steve I reckon you were pretty wise. The fire was certainly close to you, scary!!:o
You hear reports of people who loose everything and the things they miss the most are personal memories such as photo's etc. Papers are important
to make insurance claims go more smoothly and promptly. Imagine the paper work if you lost your papers, a major headache.
I think we'd all hate to loose our VW's
Take care up there all you guys!! |
