My 1973 1303 super / L bug

Hi guys and gals, finally had a chance to take a few photos of my beetle. Its been at the mechanics for nearly 2 months, basically having fiddly stuff finished (and going through agony). As I dont have any web space of my own, it will have to be one image per post.

I have replaced both pan halves, both rear window sills, one rear quarter panel, a large patch of the right rear wheel arch and also inserted about 15 other miscellaneous patches to fix the rust.

Was bought 18 months ago as a $500 wreck. I swapped the knackered 1500 T3 motor that was in it for 2 new pan halves.

Interior is stock (so far), although I have a set of Cobra race seats for those few motorkhana events it might go in.

Engine is an AS41 from a type 3 in canarvon, which we tore down, line bored and installed a counterweighted 69mm crank, 92mm Mahle forged pistons and cylinders, stage 2 reground cam (the old HSC 2 if anyone is familiar with High Speed Conversions), rebushed stock rods and 044 heads (stock 42 x 37 stainless valves, stock ports, standard heavy duty springs). Deep sump. Fully balanced bottom end. high volume oil pump. Case drilled for full flow oil cooler, not yet installed. Electronic ignition.

Originally had a pair of 40mm IDF's with CB linkages and manifolds, but they were proving to be far too much trouble to set up, so I removed them and replaced with a 40DCNF for now. IDF's will go back on later when I have the time and money to fiddle with them.

Stock single side plate tranny, almost completely rebuilt (soon to have brand spankers reverse gear too !!!! :) ), nolathane mounts.

Paint is Porsche guards red, but looks a little orange in the photos. Its also grubby, looks better when clean. And will have stock rims on ALL 4 wheels soon :) as the mags wouldnt fit.

If luck is with me, it will be back on the road within a couple of weeks.

Thanks very much to my father who helped me with just about everything on the car.
