Going for REGO,,, What did they spot wrong with your VW??
G'day all,,
Just about to go for REGO (28th) for the forst time since i got my Kombi (finally),,,
Just wondering what the REGO guy picked up on in your cars? (I guess so i can check mine first),,,
Did anyone get failed first time?

I would like to know also... just in case...
Some people seem to have no problems getting their VW passed after having been unregistered for years.... and having a few mods done... others seem
to have many problems...
Is it best to have it looking like a standard VW ??
Maybe if You get there at 5 to 5pm they won't have time to find anything....

No oil leaks
Done this a few times::
Brake lines etc not cracked
No excess grease on nipples etc
No play in front end - ANYWHERE (balljoints, wheel bearings, trailing arm sleeves, kingpins)
Locking tabs fitted to front end bolts into frame head, steering box etc
All tyres new/good and matching
Door trims fitted - no sharp edges in interior
Pedal rubbers
Standard steering wheel and seats - or engineer's cert for mods
Seat belts in good shape
All lights work - inc number plate light!
Windscreen washer bottle working
that's all I can think of for now - good luck!

Did You have a non genuine steering wheel Dave ??
and I'm not sure whether I reused those locking tabs on the front end etc... they are only really made to be used once..
Is Your Beetle lowered Dave?
Standard exhaust Dave?
Everything is new on MY Beetle including all bolts & nuts...
excepting electrical switches , wiper motor etc..
New Headlamps & Tail lamps.. New Windscreen..]
standard Beetle wheels... I have a set of 14" chromed rims but the tyres have perished & the rims have gone a bit rusty...

Rego checks
I remember in the past (QLD), my 71 bug was knocked back for a supposed 'problem' with the headlights, the fact that you could have the lights on
without the ignition was apparently a safety issue. I had to get a note from Mick Motors back then stating that this was normal for my model bug.
They didn't seem happy after this and got me for oil leaks and steering wheel. I had a sports wheel and had to loan a standard one for rego.
I hope to get my '69 bug rego'd into NSW in the next few months (has VIC currently), I have been told that I cannot have the sports wheel on it
during rego. Also, the mechanic has told me his rule of thumb for oil leaks. When he puts the car on the hoist and looks underneath the car, if it
drops oil while its up there, it fails!
I was also done years ago for engine lid or bonnet that doesn't stay up by itself.

My first kombi needed the handbrake adjusted, a new windscreen, the washers fixed (cut about an inch out of the hose where the leak was), a battery
tie-down (about $7) and I was given a choice to either remove the rear seat and belts, or repair the damage to the seat back, where a previous owner
had put something heavy on top and squashed the frame. I took it out for the RWC and fixed it up later.
My current kombi had a fairly diligent previous owner who sold it to me with a RWC.

I would have liked to have goten mine regoed with out the seat belts...if they are not standard you dont need em...still works like that right?
also depends on whether you want it for your peice of mind or theirs...you can always dig up the dodgie one.

hmm from my limited experience, it depends on who you get, someone with some sense, or someone who follows something to the .
Washer Bottle working is a great tip, treat rust as well,

Last time I had my beetle roadworthied up here in brissy I got pinged first time for the following:
- Licence plate light not working (didn't realise the bulb was blown)
= Horn not working (whoops - forgot to reconnect the wire since it was shorting out a few days before)
= Oil leaking (flywheel seal)
Re. oil leak, before I took it back for rechecking I washed all underneath (pressure blasted with degreaser) then when I drove it back, parked around
the corner, let it cool down for 15mins, then wiped underneath so it was spotless then drove it to them. shhh....don't tell anyone though!

when i did my daughters 1960 i have the mechanic a list and left the oil all over the engine. he told me to fix my list and get 2 new rear tyres. 3
hours later job done. ive allways found it easier to let them find small faults instead of expensive ones |

Is Getting a BLUE slip is harder than a pink slip ???
I can remember a mechanic friend saying He didn't like passing cars with NO defects at all... as the RTA might get suspicous !!!
So, most had tail or stop lamp blown.. Horn or windscreen washer not working etc..
although I heard of a local garage defecting a car as the REAR Windscreen washer bottle was empty ??
Couldn't the Mechanic fill it up???
My electrics are always OK as I like to fiddle... and I go over My cars every week...
I didn't think a crack in a guard would be a defect...
I suppose the rules are getting tougher these days....

equipment) would be suspicious? do they ever magnet test the bodywork?

Just remember any deviations from stock could mean the inspector will say he wants an engineers cert.
I had a 15 millioneth edition Superbug with a dealer fitted Britax sunroof. Had to get an engineers report for it along with aftermarket seats before
they would pass it. $120 for the report, and you have to pay more money each inspection for the blue slip inspector to verify the certificate mods.
Just put standard wheels, seats, etc in there for the test
And most of all make sure everything is clean including giving your car a wash and vacuum.

Mine failed on the demister. I had to take the extracters off & put stock exhausts with the heater boxes on.
Other than that a bit of structural rust that I couldn't see, but when it was 6 feet in the air on a hoist, it stood out like dogs balls.
But as someone has already mentioned, for a blue slip, it shoul be stock as a rock.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

Thanks all,,, heaps of tips.
Mine is standard throughout so should'nt fail there, very slow oil leak (just clean underneath before test), tyres, electric all good, rust all gone
(hope i got it all, but will soon see on the hoist), I will replace the seatbelts first,,,,,
Bout the only thing I'm not sure about is the front end, feels pretty tight but will see on Wednesday,,,

Yeah, minor stuff you'd reckon (74 Baywindow Bus):
* heaters weren't working properly, somehow
* no wipers!
* door latching only on first catch - driver door needs 2 catches
* headlights need aiming
* no horn
* other minor things, none engine related
Luckily the dealer had to fix all that stuff, since he can't sell it without a roadworthy! I am glad I got the independant RW done though.

Yeah my bus was wierd,
all passed up here in QLD,
except for one thing, on the plates it stated i should only have 2 seats,
i had 8, the 2 rear bench seats were stockers.............. WHAT THE!!!!! engineers cert later all good.... |
