Sydney Melbourne Roadtrip
Well, a trip Sydney to Melbourne return trip is pretty boring, so I had to make it interesting, & used it to test improvements I have made since
the central Aust. Trip
I had to take my son to the Aust open Karate Championships, & had plenty of time for preparation, main objective was to obtain my original
objective of being able to constantly cruise at 100kmh if necessary. I had finally sorted out the motor itself to be hopefully reliable, so that left
all the peripherals. Main problem to attack was engine temp, the target being no going over 210f , so , remote oil filter & a week later large
oil cooler mounted horizontally under centre of vehicle, with as yet, no ducting or scoop. This seemed OK as I just managed to do it before the end of
summer & a 40 deg day had the oil temp just getting to 210f.
Next was a slightly strange Twin 32DIR progressive Weber setup, with the primary hope of improving fuel economy & the hopeful hope of improving
performance, after a coupla weeks of stuffing around fuel economy around town was the same at 18mpg , but performance had much improved, petrol fumes
& all normal Solex carbie problems had disappeared . Starts hot or cold as soon as the starter motor turns, and an added bonus was heaps more
engine bay room.
Next thing was to replace the hopelessly optimistic speedometer which had turned out to be about 12% fast , luckily the 2nd speedo I fitted turned out
dead accurate .
Previously 3000 revs insinuated 90kmh now I find that 3400 revs is the real 90kmh. I was very optimistic about reliability so took no spares &
minimal tools (did take Hammer)
Headed off Wed 14th April at 7am sitting on 100kmh & 110 kmh downhill, trying to keep vac reading no lower that 5 hg/in tach sitting between
3600/ 3900 revs (automatic means large variation in revs for a given speed).
Ambient temp was cool (under 20C) that morning & oil temp did not go above 185F
Fuel Guage sank rather rapidly though…….. filled up at Yass , 17mpg BUMBUM
Eased off a bit, next stop Albury 17.5mpg Bum . It was also now a hot day 30C.
This impacted in that on leaving Albury If I sat on 100kmh the oil temp rose to 210f & indicated it would keep going up, so if I droped back to
between 90 & 95kmh the temp would quickly drop to about 200f , did not matter whether I was going up or down hill & however much throttle,
the heat build up was purely revs & ambient temp related.
Made Melbourne at 4.45pm & 18mpg.
Friday 16th was the drive home, decided to gritt my teeth & keep speed to 90kmh to see how the economy was affected , 1st stop Albury 18.5mpg
STUFFED if I am going to keep at that speed to save a dollar or so went back to 100kmh , ambient temp was 25C so oil temp was no issue, staying
around 190f. filled at Yass 17.5mpg
By now I just wanted home so sat on 110kmh wherever possible & achieved 17mpg,
In all I did about 1900km , used 500ml of HPR5 oil each way & had no non nil zilch
Problems with vehicle , so I have achieved reliability but trip fuel economy has gone out the window. I would be happy with 20mpg………..
I was now used to the advantages of the Webers & want to keep them, but they seem strangled so the only thing externally I could do was try
extractors , on the type4 these generally give poorer results than a standard exhaust when fitted to a standard motor with standard carbs , but in
this case it was worth a try… round to V-Force for some heavy guage quality extractors & Richard kindly fabricated a hotdog & tailpipe up
for me. Noisy Noisy Noisy now & need to run a few tanks of fuel to see what happens , but performance certainly seems to have improved & I am
quite often using at least 5ins/hg less throttle to maintain same speed so a few weeks & I should have the answer
Oh yeah,, Sydney to Melbourne I overtook 24 vehicles, Melbourne to Syd 38 vehicles, VERY exciting!!!

THAS OK, it is what we should be doing, helping each other with info which may seem trivial but can help significantly in developing / reliabiliting a
vehicle, it takes a while though, I type it in Word , maybe over a few days, then copy/paste

Ha, I think we overtook 3 cars on the way back from the nationals...1 truck as well. We weren't counting but they were such rare events that we
couldn't help but remember them...My 1.6 monster's oil temp sat on about 110c all the way. the temp outside was warm but I'm not sure how
warm...mid 20s at a guess. Fuel consumption was heavy, for the first time in memory I didn't even bother looking at the litres when we filled. It
had a bout 500kg of stuff in the back as well. I like the drive once you get to the Vic border, I reckon there are less big hill on this side of the
Murray. What do you reckon?
