Restored versus rebuilt
Hi,
I am a huge Vee dub nut and have been for many years. I have a issue though, that is, when someone says their car is restored when it isn't. For
example, there is a shop in Canberra, where I live, and they constantly claim to "restore" beetles when they are so far from restored it is not
funny. I see the word restore and I think of the car being "as left the factory" condiotion and specs.
The Oxford English Dictionary states: "Restore: biring back to original state by rebuilding, repairing, repainting, emending etc.; make
representation of supposed original state of (extinct animal, ruin, etc.)"
Now this vee dub place calls a beetle with a modern interior, 1600cc engine and modern colour restored. In my opinion that is crap! it is rebuilt but
not restored!
I even see this in peoples ads "restored vw, 1916cc motor, sports seats, etc etc" Do these people know what restored means??? do they think that a
fresh coat of paint means restored???
I know I am being a bit anal, but this is how I feel and I believe these people are misrepresenting there cars and misrepresting to vw hobby. I am
particlulary anoyed at the vw place (no I am not going to mention its name) as people that have no idea go there and buy a car or get a car worked on
and they think it is restored, when it is far from it. They take nieve poeple and say "oh yeah its restored", these people that bought the car or
had it restored then run around the country side saying there car is restored making a arse of themselves.
The moral of what I am saying is choose you words carefully and correctly.
This is my whinge and I will now crawl back under my vw rock from which I came.
Cheers.
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail.....
But a true friend will be sitting next to you saying "Damm that was fun!!!"

Ahm, yeah! Do you think it's time you went out and
had some really good sex?
If you see the word "restored", call whoever used the
word up, and ask them if it is to original standard.
Wouldn't that save you the frustration?
If you want a restored Bug, turn up to the next Nats
with a truckload of cash, pick one and make an offer
that the owner cant refuse.
I personally enjoy seeing what people do in their
rebuild's or resto's. You really get to see so much
personality packed into each car. It's half the fun
of the game.
Don't mean to diss you man! Just get a little less
serious. Serious people don't drive Dub's (or is that
just me?).

I just couldn't help myself, it had been eating away at me for some time. I admire all vee dubs no matter their condition or what has been done to
them. It just one of those things that frustrates me.

I'm with ya son.
If it's got so much as mags, then it's modified.
I saw one refered to as "restored" when it was a hot axe convertable!! I don't try to be hard to get along with, but, how is it restored if you cut
the f#cken roof off??
My pet peeve with a beetle is use of the word"RARE".
With 21,529,464 built, which one is the rare one????

Well if that is the criteria for restored, then it is virtually impossible as you you need the paint from the original German supplier the rubbers,
brake pads, tyres, upholstery ect ect
I am currently "refurbishing" a beetle, and I reckon it will be better than original by using two pack paint, neoprene seals, stainless steel bolts
and radial tyres ....Forgive me Please!
Keeping it real !

So to be Really " restored " would mean brand new engine cases
or New Old Stock - all the engine parts.
The fact that the second hand crank with a re-grind would be capable of another 100 000 Miles is irrelevant - it would
be the basis of a re-built VW.
- and forget those Brazilian gaskit sets, its New German or bust.!
Oh that reminds me...Damm ,I put the second hand gear shift
shaft in the tunnel of my Oval. I'll have to purchase a brand new one and replace it.

My restorers are 'writing a book' (or it sems that way ) for me about
what they are doing....just so if I ever do sell or anyone asks I can show them it all in writing...I didn't ask for it, they just do it....along
with the pics they take....
Bel is going to be more a custom resto!!! The ragtop she never had....paints gunna be probably a little later than '58...Then there are the pop-outs
if I ever find them
I never wanted to go so full on but I did want to restore....I guess it snow balls on you!!!! ......:thumb
What ever...just so long as you love your ride....and have a smile on your face!!!

We seemed to have wandered away from the original topic. What is restored & what is not.
Restoration of anything is to have the original specifications.
It's not about making sure that every part for a '56 beetle was built in '56. That the same '56 runs a 36hp motor, any 36hp, not a 1916 with twin
webers.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.
