HELP ME! (please) My Generator isnt charging , will my superbug generator slot right in?
SCROLL DOWN THERES MORE\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
well.......we got a flat battery on the way home from brissy last night in the new baja......immediatly thought of generator but as we couldnt do much
else i bought a new battery for it.........this morning i gave the new machine a wash and took off the crappy and rather annoying "Bugger" sticker
of the windscreen then thought we would check the battery charge.....got the multi meter out and hooked it up......12 volts engine off..........12
volts engine on...........rev the car....no change at all...........THE THINGS NOT CHARGING:cry .........as im not a great mechanic .....i was
wondering if anyone could shed some light for me......apparently it has had the genny recoed....is it possible that its the regulator?.....can we do a
volts check straight from the genny? .....ive got some pics of the regulator because there is one terminal out of the 4 that isnt connected.....i
think this may be the genny warning light because there is no genny warning light when the key is in the on position but then again im no auto
sparky......has someone got a trouble shooting procedure i can execute here so i know how much this is going to lighten my pockets?......i really need
this car to be reasonably reliable......
UPDATE!!!!
OK we have figured out what the problem is...(the brushes) sow i have been told that new brushes are cheap and easy however i have a 71 super bug
bitza car sitting here with a working generator (as far as i know) .......will the generator off the 1600 TP in the super go straight on to replace
the one on the 1600 SP in my baja?.....i cant see there being a real difference....:alien
thanks in advance
Nick

could be regulator, I know wif mine I had major hassles, same prob cept gen light stayed on. checked out wiring diagrams etc, sent em off to vw place
and to auto electrician, the both said i had it all ok, .... fine thought worse (must be dud gen.. btw I was getting right volts at crucial points etc
).... breakdown on busy city road, arranged safe place to stow offending vehicle and tow truck ride later (fem driver who laughed at the multimeter on
passenger seat hehehe), took gen out etc off to autoelectrician for bench test.......... well wattcha know I was missing a crucial ground
connection... all good now,, but bought regulator for no reason,,,, and new battery for no reason..... do search in this place,, and in the samba...
work out the wiring... if it looks like there is an extra connection it may be for a reason...... I just wished I'd pulled the gen out in first
place,, $40 for test and new connections........... if in doubttttttt.... sometimes even the pros can't guess for you!

thanks heather
i know i really should take it somewhere:P, but i gotta learn these things.....the problem with finding a wiring diagram is that after VIN
verification and a general comparison to features of the car indicates that it my in fact be a 62 model!:o ........i think its a bit of a
bitza.....its registerd as a 68 by the way:P.....it definatly is no 68 bug.......and it has a 1600 SP motor in it which is not a stock engine for
whatever year it may be lol .....so all the wiring is going to be different......ive gotta get the brake lights to work by thursday too lol (generator
can wait) cause i gotta do my P's test in the beast! ..........oh well i might have to take it to someone about the genny i should be able to get the
lights to work (fingers crossed) whoever did the wiring job on this thing liked electrical tape...LOTS OF IT!

OK we have now, after some advice from "Sky" (thanks mate) pushed in the brushes on the generator with the engine on and when pushed in the genny
charges fine .....however the brushes look fine and pretty recent.....the springs that hole them in however are crappy and rusted and are putting
hardly any pressure on the brushes and therefore they are not contacting the spinning generator shaft thingy........does anyone know if these can be
purchased? (the springs that is)......or is there another way to keep them contacting the shaft?

New Brushes are Needed...
The brushes, which are available from auto electricians, and should be dirt cheap too... I know they buy them very cheap.
Some brushes actually come with the springs, not too sure about VW Bosch generators though...
The springs are very light otherwise the brushes wouldn't last too long... and when the Brushes are New, the springs are really compressed... so I
believe You need New Brushes..
I can measure a spring for You tomorrow..
The end of a Brush should be sticking out the end of the brush holder.. if the brush is down in the groove of the brush holder .. the Brushes need
replacing... the springs are light and usually do look rusty as spring steel rusts very easily... A New Set of BRUSHES will give the springs MORE
Tension and You will be back on the road..

Brake Lamps... BRAKE Switches..
Hi again,
Check the brake switch-switches located on the master cylinder under the fuel tank on the RH Side..
Check the fuse first.. It should be one of the 1st two fuses ..
the Brake switches only work with the ignition on..
What model beetle is it You Have??
If its a 12 volt model, 1968> You should have 2 brake switches and its highly unlikely that both are faulty..
So its probably faulty wiring, and why most Beetles have had had someone with lots of PVC tape operate on their electricial wiring, I don't know...
They Did work in the first place!! Power goes on One side of the brake switch, and the other terminal goes to the brake lights...
If You can't find the problem with the brakes in time for thursday, just attach a wire from one of the 1st two fuses [under the bonnet] to one of thebrake switch terminals.. If the lights stay on [with the ignition on] use the other terminal... and the brake lights should work....
if NOT.. It IS a brake switch...
If You need any MORE information just let Me know...

thanks so much for your advice lee youre a champ.....but ive already fixed the brake lights now .........after tracing all the wires (and some advice from a mates brother in law [mechanic]) and wondering why the
thing wasnt working we bent up the non-live side of the brake light fuse thingy where it connects to the wire clip......it must have been earthing
:thumb .......so simple yet it took so long to figure out......ahh well done now..........it shall get a new loom soon when i can be bothered to fix
up all the dodgy wiring thats in it now........sometimes a wire would change colour 5 times before it got to where it was going.....throw in copius
amounts of electircal tape and youve got a great spiderweb to work with

Yes Nick,
All 12 Volt generators are the same...
A 1600 single port engine was never used in VWs in Australia, Only in the USA...
I also have a 1600 single port engine, it was originally a 1500 single port engine.... what is Your engine number?
It will probably start with H ... which means it was a single port 1500 engine from 1968-69-70..
It will be easier to take the brushes from the other generator & put them in Yours, than take the Generator off..
its NOT as easy as it looks.. there is a wide Fan on the end of the generator... that makes it hard work.... You have to be able to pull the
generator with backing plate & Fan straight out.... which means taking off the inlet manifold & You have to disconnect the heat riser pipes
off the exhaust which is best left alone.... most heat risers and mufflers do NOT line up correctly...
Great to hear You found the brake Lamps OK...
If You want something to do, You can pull every electrical terminal off, one at a time & clean/polish them with a wire brush... including both
ends of fuse holders & terminals in fuse box.. You would have to disconnect the earth lead to the battery to do this safely...
All the terminals were bright shiny when New, but now they are contaminated & dirty.. and need to be cleaned..
Also, take the earth lead off the chassis and clean it and the body where they touch.. & the bolt.. as ALL the power in the Car goes thru this
connection... wire brush again...
best wishes
Lee

Engine numbers starting with AD..
came in Beetles that were made in 1971-72-73...
they were 1600 twin port engines.. 65 BHP.. [SAE not DIN]
