timing light wierdness


hi guys attempting to time my car but my inducive timing light is causing engine to shut done when i pull triger. i have the red connected to the coil that runs to to the dist and the black connected to the case. when i pull trigger timing light fires but then engine revs drop off and engine dies doesa this mean my coils about to shit itself ? any ideas

Yes, you've connected the Red clip to the wrong side of the coil, it should be on the side that receives the 12V. Where you have it, it's shorting out the points.

ok when i connect to the other side the car just dies as soon as i connect the lead.

and again


could it be possible that my coil is connected back to front. the coil used does not have any +ve or negative markings. I have a spare coil (gt40 ) that clearly has +ve and -ve marked on it . If i change coils and put the gt 40 on am i right in thinking that ignition wires go to =ve and the -ve wires go to the dizzy. thanks for the help.
