It's a moon one , only as switch for 4,6 and 8 cylinders. Someone must have done this before! The wiring is simple enough just need to know about the power source and what i have to buy.

Hi

How many connections does it have and what type are they.

I have Stewart Warner tacho in my bug now (it was in my 1st bug in 1971) that only needs an earth & - from the coil, no voltage input. So it would run on any voltage.

4 wires , this is what it says on the instructions

Black - to negative battery terminal or good chassis ground

Red - to switched 12v circuit at fusebox or splice into a wire which is engergized when ignition is on

White - to panel lights circuit at fusebox or splice into any wire connected to the panel lights circuit

Green - to the appropiate vehicle tachometer source

What do i do?

Dan:)

I have a VDO tacho thats 6v. Its from an old BMW from the early sixties but its very close to a VW one. Very nice unit.

Let me know if your interested and I'll dig it out and work out a price.

Cheers

Okay managed to track down a converter but the owner ran a stereo and other gauges and not a tacho. So all i now need to know is where to put the wire on the coil and if it's going to okay as it's a 6V coil. Help please!!!!

Dan :)

The connection to the coil is only for the signal to the tacho. This pulse will tell the tacho how many rpm you are doing. It will not damage the gauge to connect to a 6v coil though depending upon the tacho you might not get enough voltage to get a reading.
Is worth a try to see what you get.

the tacho has 4 wires , ground , lighting , coil and 12v source. I can get an inverter for the 12v . So you reckon it's worth hooking it all up and seeing what happens?

Thanks Dan:)

Desert Moose it doesn't say how many amps it uses and has 4 wires as mentioned earlier in the thread. Here's a pic of the tacho anyway!

Yeh give it a go with the inverter to see if the pulse is strong enough. make sure you keep the light 12v as well and run it off the inverter.
