VDO Dipstick Temp Gauge shorting out?

Got the fright of my life when the temp gauge in my kombi started bouncing off the far right end of the dial, then realised it must be an electrical fault.

Being a complete beginner when it comes to electronics I have no idea what is causing it. Does anyone know of an online wiring diagram for these or how it should be wired.

I don't know how the dipstick assembly should look so don't know whether the fault is there or in the wiring from engine bay to gauge.

Incidentally, when I take the two spade connectors off of the dipstick, the needle still bounces of the max end of the gauge.

Thanks

Joel
