Stock Alternator & Bosch

Want to ask about Alternators...

someone offered me a Stock VW Alternator with 50amps for a good $150 (used unit)

I'm looking to install a sound system in my bug, headunit and 320watt rear speakers.

Is it reliable enough to run the audio system..

or should I get a Bosch 55amp ? for $280 Used ? from someone else ?

In comparision, is it similar?

thanks seagull, yeah I checked Mick motors @ $380, but I have a tight budget, so $150 is great, but I want to know if it will do the job correctly and effectively ?~

actually is the VW stock alternator powerful enough ? cause I'm thinking, the aircooled VW back then won't have a CD player ..... so will a stock alternator do the job right now ?

The last model Generators used on 12 volt VWs were rated by VW as 360 watts... which isn't a LOT of power but they did charge the battery while the engine was idling....
something other generators Do NOT do... including the old 6 volts... they only charge when revving..
ALTERNATORS charge all the time... very effecient...
There were two alternators used by VW.. one was Motorola with an external regulator and the other was the Bosch with built in regulator.. I don't know if Bosch ever made any with an external regulator... the internal regulators seem to be the best... the external ones seem to have to be replaced every two years or so... same with a Magna I had years ago... and My Sons Beetle too... I believe the internal regulators are heavier built than the external solid state regulators...
cheers

Lee,

Many many many thanks !! I understand a lot now. So any alternator will do, as long as it charges all the time, instead of a generator!

If someone's offering this Stock VW Alternator, does it mean, it has to be a Motorola or Bosch and no other brands ?

Thanks!

It won't really matter what brand Don...
any one will do.. I've only seen Bosch and Motorola Alternators... and they all do charge all the time...
and are mostly trouble free...

Lee
