Anyone able to give me some advice?
hey im 18, in Melbourne and thinking about a career..
i have Cert 2 in interactive multimedia, and Cert 3 in IT.. and have decided computers although everywhere.. isnt a great career choice as it is so
damn compeditive.. the multimedia stuff i thought i'd like to do would need me to be the best of the best to get much work and i dont think im cut
out for it
i have been considering doing a panelbeating Pre App.. and maybe see about doing a Apprentiship.. does anyone have any thoughts, ideas or
reccomendations?
think it is somthing i could enjoy doing
my other thought is perhaps youth work/ councelling
again ideas/comments etc highly appreciated!

well are you still at school? what about sying if you could alling some work experince type sort of thing in each area? eg spend 3 weeks (to get it
you may have to go on no/low pay) doing each thing?
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

ok. being serious now.
how about going to see one of those career advisor people?
i know it sounds kinda dicky, but they know their stuff and they give you all manner of help/advice/quizes to do that find out your strengths and
goals and stuff.
they have them here in brisbane, some company in the city - you can get a consultation for about $70 - i know of a heap of post - uni people and post
- school ppl and post - job ppl who have been to them and come away with a "new direction" or at least a clearer view of their goals.
they are the same kind of companies that do "employee profiles" and the like for recruitment places and large organisations etc.
anyway. there is my 2 cents.
i am going to stop procrastinating on the forum and try and do some STUDY.
ps. i was only joking about cleaning your house...... i still have a batch of lemon butter to make before i run out of procrastination

lil dub - thanks for the suggestion..
my old man works at a job placement agency so he can organise a meeting for me with some people to discuss that kinda thing! 
just kinda after peoples experiences in apprenticships, panel beating as a whole, and any councellors or anyone who works with youth see how they feel
about their work
i think both are things i may enjoy.. as i like helping people out, and im not afraid of a bit of work

hi, i dont know what the job scene is like in melb but i know in adelaide it is really hard to find a good job as a youth worker, great job if ya get
it but hard to find a postion after you finish study.
well its a great start that you have yr 12 behind you as it will help alot .

I work in the car trade and always have , work in many panelshops etc every week . You asked for advise and my advise is stay well clear of panelshops
, garages etc. It suits some , including me for the last15 years but it will only ever take you so far and what you need to ask yourself is can you
see yourself enjoying doing that in a few years time. Although i enjoy my work and contacts it brings etc if i had my chance again i'd do something
that allowed my to be creative in some way cause thats the sort of person i am. I'm leaving my job and the car trade in a few weeks , generally it's
not the best paid of jobs and now as resident i can work for anyone , which i am!. Maybe take a look what you enjoy or are naturally good at and see
where that takes you. As said before see someone that will give you an idea but remember to think outside of whats shown as there are some really
intereting things you could choose to do. My 2 cents!
Good luck and spend all your wages on VW stuff!

I started as a panel beater and worked all the way up to panel shop manager by age 28. I now am leaving the industry for other things in the
industrial tool trade.
I suppose it wasn't actually the panel beating trade itself that got me where I am now, but it was my attitude and how I manage myself that did
it.
If you want to you can just about do anything. It is usually one of your stronger traits that will enable you to be more successful in some areas
rather than others.
I would feel confident working and managing a ship restoration project, but I would be terrible at anything to do with health or human services. What
I mean here is that it is not the actual name of the job, but your application of your skills and attitude are very important.
Far out that was probably the most filosifercal thing I have said for a while. Phew!

youth work is also competitive and draining as you are dealing with other peoples problems as well as your own life. its like a mechanics car is never
right as they are too busy with their customers.
a trade is good as you can go anywhere and have it recognised and get work. so if you dont like the big smoke you can get out and vice versa.
as for computers it is highly competitive and also can be highly rewarding, but this is the same for any career you chose. if you want the most then
you have to be the best. push yourself to the best you can be then a little more. it doesnt matter wht you chose to do, cause if you understand this
then you will suceed and be happy.
me i chose sales. never much for fixed wage or boundries. sales allowed me to achieve goals obtain money and travel.
maybe look into conputers and then get into the sales side of it. ie selling software and etc to corporations. i have a mate who represents the it
company he used to do software for in their sales division.
hope i gave something to think about.... if not then at least remember this.

never knock a trade
Good trades people with a head on their shoulders is hard to find.
I did a trade (electrical - factory breakdown) but have never worked as one. Now work in construction. i am the chief estimator in a large mechanical
services area and I was chosen over uni people as i had hands on experience.
Down side is with acreditation i may be held back - we will see.
As grand pa always said - good to have a trade to fall back on.

Wow! quite a mixed bag there!
i am going to do a Pre App to get a feel for the trade.. as i really dont know a thing about panel beating.. just somthing completley different to
computers that im used to, that i think i might like!
i dont really have a clue what i REALLY want to do, and dont think i ever really will. but im going to try a few new things and see how i go in the meantime i'll keep fixing mobile phones, and making stupid cold
calls, and try to make a webpage or two and take it from there! |

i agree with the previous advise, particularly regarding a trade and more importantly how you handle yourself (re Helbus's post)
my advise is to start a trade apprenticeship. i work in the building industry (sitting at MGPO site on night shift right now) and i think if i had my
time again i would do a trade rather than uni. 5 years of study, 2 years of work, and i work longer hours and get paid less than a 2nd or third year
apprentice.
dont get me wrong though, i do like my job.

my only quarm with an apprentcship is the botched pay.. isnt it like $5 an hour?
i understand full well it is traiing (better deal than studying for nothing)
i'd hafta work full time apprentiship, then do part time work aswell yeah? |

you get the right one and the pay is good.
do you still live at home?
when you compare the pay with other peoples its not that bad. particularly when you consider that over eight hours a day and you will be getting
overtime, saturdays overtime till 12, double after and sundays double all day.
do the odd weekend (dont forget that you get 1 rdo every two weeks) and you're laughing

if you like computors and are interested in an apprenticship how about CNC machining after the poor pay of the aprenticeship you can earn a good
salary and CNC opperators are in demand at least in Sydney plus you can make great billet stuff.

that?:P)
I am also in a similar situation, i am 19 and 1 year into a business degree and pondering my moves after uni and have no idea what i will do, so know
this, you are not alone. Except i will have a $16000 hecs debt and you wont, hehehehehe....mmmmm :cussing
