is it necessary?

I've got a 54 beetle with the cross-plys on the front still. As the early models didn't have any sway bars, I was thinking of installing one off a later bug. Would it make a large difference in handling? I dont intend to drive it very hard, though i'm sure there will be a corner or three I'll give it some stick for sh!ts and giggles....
