71 all super bugs are IRS however their pans arent interchangable to earlier bugs because of the macpherson strut front end instead of the king + link

hang on, i'm led to believe the '68 manual (including semi auto) was disc brake front ball joint front end with IRS.

You've been ready American Articles haven't you :)

America all cars from 1968 were IRS.

Australia didn't get a manual with IRS/BJ until 1976 with the run-out model. Semi Autos from 68 in Australia were IRS/BJ. Super bugs from 71 were IRS/McStrut. Standard Beetles (1300) were Swing/BJ until runout (1976).
