Valve adjustment


Cant seem to stop the valves tapping on a '64 beetle motor. I have tried to set them to .006" but no luck.
Any ideas?

You can set your exhaust to .006" and your inlet to .004" safely. The tapping maybe from sideways movement rather than excessive gap.

If your engine is an origional 1200 you may find it has the early model tappet / rocker studs still fitted.

There is a modification that removes this type of stud and replaces it with a shorter one.

The origional type are about 100mm long and you can see them sticking through the back of the rocker area and down into the cylinder head. The problem is they have a tapper fit where they go through the back of the head this expands n contracts and causes the thread to pull and therefore your tappet adjustment will never be right. This will gradually get worse and you will loose power

You will have to find some modified heads and remove the engine and replace them, or have yours modified if you can find some of the shorter tappet studs.

The tappet adjustment should be 0.006" or 0.15mm on both inlet and exhaust set when COLD.

Not being mechanically minded as yet I couldn't tell you if mine taps.....but I listened to 'Bugger's bug yesterday when he had it running and I thought it sounded sweeeeet....but, I wouldn't know.....!

Thanks for the info dave. It is a 1200 and I am almost certain that it has the longer studs. I have been told that it could also be a stickie lifter, not sure if this is the case but will run some upper head lube to see if it helps.
It will be a process of elimination I think.

If you stick your head under neath the engine you should be able to see the longer valve studs sticking through from the back of the rocker area and down into the cylinder head fins

Its about 10mm dia
