70 Bug alternator problem

I just bought my first dub (1970, 1500 currently running a 1300 engine) and it was running great until it started to jerk very slightly at revs. I drove it on the weekend. I stopped to fill up and it would not restart. Just the usual clunk noise when the battery is flat. Roll started it and got home. The Generator light is on intermittantly and the battery will not charge. The RACV came and tested the current from the battery and go to the engine and they were both below norm.

I have checked the bushes on the alternator and they are in good nick. The fan belt is tensioned right and I took the top off the "relay"? in the back seat and there is no sign of any burning or fusing.

I do not want to run the engine in case I blow the alternator so any assistance you could give a new dubber would be appreciated.

Thanks

how is the battrey??? - may have internal shorts. Can you swap and see if that makes a difference.

What voltage is on the battery when idling??? Should be 13.5 volts or so.

Being picky - do you have an alternator or generator???

Alternators dont have bushes - generators do.
I didnt think generators had their regulators under the seat though????

Anyway

Thanks glad to be in.

The battery is 4 months old.

I wasn't sure if you called it an alternator or generator.

The voltage I think was around 9 - 10 then surged back up to 14 but then dropped back down. The generator light would then come on and off. The motor would also stop on idle.

Yeh I agree is it an altinator or generator, if generator ist probably your regulator.

Try saying that 3 times fast after a 6 pack

I will have 2 crowns that it is your regulator.
I should be sitting on at least 13 Volts.

I would take it to an auto lekky if you aint real confident.

Thanks for all your help. I have been given a quote for a regulator and generator that seems a bit extreme. Any one know where I can get one that doesn't cost me an arm or a leg as I would like to have some left over for those crowns of my own.

I have a good generator ( or was when it was pulled and has just sat ) you can have for......$65? + delivery

Dont think delivery would be that much. Still has the fan.

We don't like being mind readers kickatinalong thats why You should have put Your location in Your Profile.....

If its a generator, it does have a regulator under the rear seat... if its an Alternator, it won't.... & shouldn't !!
Both Generators and Alternators have brushes which do wear out... they are inexpensive and not too difficult to replace...
Its probably a generator and Your regulator is faulty.....
they do wear out .... after 25 years .....

I have checked the brushes and they seem to be in fairly good condition and still have lots of wear left. I hope that it is just the regulator that needs replacing.

Thanks again
