this kind of fuel usage possible?


1600 tp, 30pict carb, 009 dissy. 15 liters took me 63 miles. Give or take thats 15 liters per 100km. My V8 Jag did 20 per 100. The error in my speedo is only 5mph, so 100kph shows 65mph. She runs beautifully, and the plugs arent fouled. But thats obcene fuel consumption is it not?

that ain't good. My 1776, twin 40mm dels, extrators etc, gets about that in the city(and I drive like a hoon!!!!), but thats running rich and blows smoke on full throttle, but the highway sees 10l/100km



I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

My mileage on my stock (untuned) 1500 bug is around 10.2 litres / 100 k's, (approx), or to swing it round, I get around 250 miles from my 40 litre tank (city driving). I'm not up on a 30 pict carb or a 009 dissy but something in there is slurping a fair bit of fuel!

I'm getting that too. I did 120 miles on 35 litres of fuel since I put my webers on. With the Kads I got about 35MPG! Help!
I'm told that it's because Webers require a different fuel pressure to Kads (I need a pressure regulator) and then have to be jetted after you have given them the right pressure, rather than compensate for the wrong pressure by changing the jetting. True??? Anyone??
It does blow smoke on full throttle though so it is running rich, but the plugs aren't fouled.

To much fuel pressure can force past the needle and seat over filling the fuel bowl, pouring fuel straight out the main jet, have a look down a throat (with a mirror - unless you dont like your eyebrows/hair) when its running - you may be able to see a drip. Float level set too high has the same effect...

The other thing to remember is the accelerator pumps, every time you stomp on it you squirt twice as much fuel as the kads (4 vs. 2 nozzles). You want to adjust the accelerator pump so it just gets rid of any stumble in transition, too much fuel is just a waste !!!

How right is your jetting, float level does change jet requirements ??

at over a dollar a liter it is a pain, however what worries me is the old, "too much fuel washing the oil off the bore wearing out the engine" thing. but she doesnt blow black smoke. and the plugs seem cool. The tail pipes are very black and sooty though. But unleaded does that Im told.

i have had several tunes of motors.

A couple of things -

My speed use to read spot on - BUT the odometer use to read 20% low!! I checked it against one of those 5km high way checker things and was only just turning 4kms in the stretch. That made a BIG difference.

All my driving is real city driving and Sydney at that. My 1776 with webers use to get 12.5L / 100km

My stock motors use to only 13.5km/L

My 2L auto kombi is getting like 16-17L / 100kms

I find that a good pick is hard to find. Either the butterfly sticks or the shaft leaks. Both of these will eat fuel.

umm...yeah - should be better than that.

Also with plug checks you need to do them at varying rev ranges to jet the different jets. It is the idles that make the biggest difference to fuel consumption.

check to see the chokes are opening all the way when hot If not useing them make sure the butterfly is all the way off and can not fall open when driving
