Expert advice needed PLEASE !
Hi all,
Well i went to look at a very nice beetle today - drove it around and it felt great ! I only have a few doubts and wanted to get some feedback from
all you lovely experts
There's a bit of rust on the doors - and i lifted the mat on the driver's side and there was rust there and two little holes !! Here are some pics -
can you please tell me if this is terminal rust I should be worried about ?
Also took a pic of the engine - it's a 62 beetle with a 1600 engine - it felt good driving so i gather it's all ok.
Just need a bit of advice on the rust !
Thank you all so much !!

pic 4 - engine - the guy is asking $5900 for the car - overall it is pretty good - a few rips on the front driver seat - Will it cost too much to fix
the rust on the doors?
Thanks !!!!

I'm not a bug expert (grew out of them 20 years ago).. But I like to look at prices.. This sounds an awful lot for a car that obviously is not in top
condition..
How many have you seen?.. If this is the first one be careful of impulse and look around a little longer.. Pic 1 & 2 don't look too bad but pic
3 might indicate more problems than what first appears.. I seems like a bit of cosmetic work has been done at some stage also.. What is the history of
the car.. How long has the owner had it and what work does he know thats been done on it..
There are others more expert than I but i suggest they will say the same..
Where is the car?.. Do you have someone you can take it to for a check over?

Well, I dont think it is worth anything near that asking price, just looking at those photos. Those doors will probably be best replaced with another
set, and the floor isnt perfect either. For close to 6 grand you should be able to pick up a pretty much all-round perfect car, (only surface rust, no
holes or bubbling), including roadworthy and registration. My opinion anyway. |

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your quick reply ! The guy has had the car for 12 months and it was not restored by the previous owner but the one before that - He
mentioned it was restored about 4 years ago (mmm now that i think about it it's a lot of owners in such a short period..) He is selling cause his g-f
doesn't know how to drive manuals. It has been converted to 12 volt and it has a 1600 engine. Hew did give me the name of the mechanic that looks
after it so i might give them a call tomorrow and see what they say about it.
The car is in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney (Randwick area) And nope i don't have anyone to come out to look at it with me
Thanks

I'd keep looking... 2 holes and rust is not that great for $5900 ....like others have said for that much money you'd expect a fairly clean bug with
only surface rust...

Looks pretty rotten to me. A Beetle hides its rust very well and if it starts to show on the outside then it bound to be bad on the inside.
Check this one out for sale in Melbourne
$3000 with reg & road worthy. Not sure if the ad is still current but worth checking out.
Its on this site

From those pics I would keep looking, there will be worse things lurking under that paint job for sure.
I have a '66 beetle with 58,000 original miles, with only a small rust hole in 1 door, I thought it would be only worth around that asking price.
Keep looking, try a trip to Canberra, there are still good rust free cars to be had there if you look around.
Good luck

Next time u2u me and if i can i'll come look with you. $5900 !! Leave it alone and be patient . Car looks far to rough for that money! I'm no expert
but know my way around a bug well enough. There's a nice 65 for sale on Anzac Pde , by the lights at Alison road. Drive down from Kensington way and
it's on the left , after VW village parked on the grass.

Hi
Have a look at the 4 sales here http://www.clubvw.org.au/for_sales.htm
The 1st car 4 sale is cheaper and looks to be in much better condition than the one your looking at, be careful of "restored cars".
