it getting hot in here. closed flaps are bad
hey guys and gals
my engine is making a ticking sound (you know the sound it makes as the engine cools down and the metal contracts) it is making that all the time so i
am assuming the temp is rising and falling quite a bit as i stop and start
the engine seems to be running a bit hot
it was seriously overheating because the air flaps were jammed shut
firstly do i need those flaps closed in melbourne weather?
if not is there an easy way to disconnect the diaphram thing? (i have tried to get the tinware off the top but the screws are proving a little
stubborn
other than dirtty fins and oil not circulating (i have checked them) is there anything else that could cause the engine to over heat?

How hot is the engine? Can you hang onto the dipstick when you stop? If the dipstick is too hot to hang onto your engine is definately running
hot.
The flaps you talk about I assume are the heater ones. I'm not familar with T3's but you need to prevent coling air escaping the shrouding and
prevent hot air from under the car being sucked up back into the engine bay.
Having the heaters stuck on shouldn't affect the engine temps, but like you say the cabin will get quite warm.
Make sure your timing is correct (ie do a tune up) as poor timing will overheat an engine really quickly.
Hopefully of some help...
Cheers

Can you hear that "ticking" noise when you stop at lights, or only when you turn the engine off? I would expect to hear it every time the engine is
shut down.
Which flaps are you talking about? If you are referring to the flaps between the fan shroud and the motor (at the rear of the car), which feed cooling
air over the engine, they should most definitely be open, even in Melbourne, even in winter. They are controlled by a thermostat which can jam,
causing them to stay shut. Alot of people remove them altogether to avoid this problem, they only close to allow the engine to heat up faster at
start up.
If you mean the flaps which live on an odd shaped housing just behind the back seat, these just control the air temp going into the cabin by mixing in
cold air. They have no effect on engine temp. Personally I would pull them out as you need all teh heating you can get.
Hope this helps.
