how do i squeeze more HP out of a stock 2ltr?
Howdy fellow dubbers,
just after a bit of guidance,
i have a recently (6 months) rebuilt 2ltr stock motor in my '76 bus, i was after slightly more HP (although more than happy with what i have) mainly
in the bottom end of the rpm, also a higher top speed, currently sit between 90-100 on freeway,
my bus is lowered round 4 inches, and i run on 215/60r14's,
any ideas would be great, looking at up to $1000 to spend???????????????????????????????????????????????? |

Strip it???
Seriously- take weight out.
Otherwise for the budget a set of Webers or Dellortos would help
Next its head work, cams and exhaust

power
twin carbs wont wreck your engine
as for head work - from what i can gather, best to start with the exhaust ports when doing t4
also, exhaust.
i will be doing all the above, but will probably wait a while for the heads.
will be watching this post eagerly for any more advice too.....

Seriously, 76, if you can only get 90-100 kmh out of a freshly rebuilt 2 litre kombi, there is something wrong. Don't go searching for performance
mods until you have elimated any existing problems....

Mmmm... I'd agree with that if it were a 1600, but a fresh 2lt with everything working the way it should is more than capable of handling 100-110 kmh
on the highway. Sure, I'd slow down a bit if it's really hot, hilly, or when towing or carting a decent load, just in the interests of engine
longevity, but heat problems can be fixed with oil coolers & elephant ears.
Putting performance gear such as carbies and extractors on your kombi is not going to make the engine last longer, just because it has more power in
reserve. In fact, it will probably have the opposite effect, because the components that are still stock will be under more stress with the extra
power and heat you will develop with a modified motor.
My reco'd 1800 is capable of sitting on 110-120 kmh all day without overheating. Admittedly, I don't have a temp gauge, so I can't give you actual
figures for operating temperatures, but I do know what an overly hot VW engine smells like, and mine doesn't overheat even when pulling a trailer.
The one thing I have changed on my kombi is the rear tyres. I firmly believe that constant high revs will kill a motor, so mine now sits on approx.
3000 rpm @ 100 kmh. At this speed, the motor is noticably quieter, and lopes along quite comfortably. On my recent trip to Bendigo I sat on 110-120
kmh with no hassles.
Sure, my tyres are overkill for most people, and the bus does suffer a little from a standing start, and won't hold top up some of the hills that it
did with the 205/60-15's I was running before, but I think you have some benefits to be gained by fitting tyres that are closer to stock O.D. They
won't fix the bottom end power problem, but they will decrease the revs at highway speeds.

Kruizin_76,
Read my post on this thread.
http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=24447
Short answer to both your questions (power and gear ratios) is that your tyres are too small.

You may find my post in Member's Rides interesting.
My tyres are overkill for most people's needs, but the wheels may be exactly what you're after.

A two litre box like what we have got should give 3000rpm at 100kph. This seems to be a nice rpm/speed combo and like Colin's kombi, does not appear
to be overheating. In fact after driving on the highway the air shroud on the engine is cool to touch.
We regularly cruise 110kph on the freeway no probs.

Nice Ride!
The handling increased dramatically in a positive way.
Before we had stock rims with 185/75/14 Bridgestone somethings. Nice quiet tyres.
The rims now are aftermarket 16x7 with Potenza 205/55/16 tyres. It was only about 8mm height difference. The ride is slightly tighter, a little bit
more road noise.
The biggest advantages are the cornering was improved massively and the braking was better with less dive.

You should be able to play with the length of the flat linkage that connects the pedal to the linkage that runs across the floor. You can then set the
pedal angle to anything you want... it's a very simple mod.
