Check your battery...it might not be holding the correct charge/might be starting to die. The cold weather would not help. Move to sunny North QLD!!!!

Make sure the electrolyte level in ya battery is correct. It is real fun in these babies. Then if it continues to happen get the battery voltage and cells checked.
99% sure the prob is the battery and not ya starter.
If all that fails; always park it on a hill facing down.

Yeah i concur with dubnut.

I had a similar problem, about a year ago last winter. Went to melbourne for a week, came back and the starter would turn over so slowly i had to push start it. The battery was at fault, because it was god knows how old. Batteries tend to lose their energy the colder it gets.

To check your battery, get a voltmeter, if the battery is putting out less than 13v then you should probably replace it wiht a new one. Not expensive or difficult at all.

I'm sure that both Wizards are absolutely correct. It's 99 % battery problem, not starter. That's my experience too. At 11 to 11.5 volts, an auto. battery is flat, or worse. At 12 - 12.1 volts, it's barely adequate. Consider that a new battery has 12.5 volts or more.

Two things I've noticed that many Kombi owners rarely, if ever, replace: the battery, and the fuel filter. Hence - starter problems and fuel blockages.

Hope your Kombi gets well soon.

My Battery in My Beetle [6 months old EXIDE - the best] is usually just under 13 volts.. [being restored so engine doesn't go very often... fewminutes every week or so... but with the cold weather [-1C] it has dropped to 11.8 Volts...
Still starts engine OK... but the cold weather will tell the difference between a good Battery & a battery waiting to die... You people in Queensland must get a long life from Your Batteries...

Agreed, Lee - Exide are the best. It's taken me years to wake up. Where, may I ask, are you living, that the temperature gets down to -1 ? Canberra? Kosiusko?

Just 330kms NNW of Sydney.. in the Horse capital of Australia - SCONE - We've only had a couple of -1C so far this winter.. We also get the icy winds from Barrington tops where it does snow.. but the winds help to keep the temperature from dropping too low... Mostly its been between 5 & 8C between night & morning....
I used to sell Batteries a few years ago & found EXIDE were the best.. Century were the worst.. 2 out of every 10 were faulty.. & We only sold their top of the line batteries.. the ordinary ones had a higher faulty rate.. the replaced them without any problems, but who wants to install a car battery twice...
cheers

Thanks, Lee. Now I know what batteries to avoid.

Scone had me confused for many years. Back in the, well many years ago, we used to travel from Blacktown to Windsor in a Rail Motor. I'm sure there was a railway station named Scone on that line. The rail motor was a great ride, we did get used to the swaying. The line was not electric past Blacktown in those days. Takes me back. Cheers.

There are still rail motors that travel up thru Scone on long weekends etc... taking Rail Buffs for a trip up north....
I have had a good look at them... a few times....
Must have been a long time ago....

Was -3C a couple of mornings ago -- 3C at the moment....

Hey Soulsurfer
Go down to battery world at Tweed and get a 13 plate. Kombi's chew up batteries. and they suffer from voltage drop at the ignition switch, old wiring and it's a long way from the battery to the switch and back to the starter! I had to fit a starter relay to mine to solve this problem.

If I ever get back to NSW...I'm gonna ride a rail motor.

Getting colder down here, too, but not that bad.

Cheers.

Vern - 20 degrees, huh? You lucky devil !

Some committee meetings I've been to recently, like the FES (Flat Earth Society), and the FSOC ( Flying Saucer Observers Club), we can't even get a quorum !
Because half our members are spending winter up in Qld.
Do you guys take your summer holidays in Melbourne when it gets too hot up there?
:-) Paul (chuckle, chuckle) Aslanides. Cold, in Melbourne.

There are many retired people who spend winter in Sunny Queensland....

and summer.... wherever they live normally....

or on the coast... with summer breezes...
