like if you buy new door handles that work better but they dont have the keys for them...can you get keys made to fit the locks

old VW shops used to be able to cut New keys back in the 60 & 70s.. as there is a number code written on the lock cylinder in door handles
etc....
Who would be able to do it now, I don't know....
I have seperate different keys for the ignition, each door and engine lid.... 4 keys... better than none I suppose....
look out for 2nd hand door handles with keys at swap meets etc.. If the handles aren't much good [scratched etc] just take the cylinder out and swap
them over... thats what I did..
otherwise just hook up an alarm inside the car with loud horn speaker [very common in alarms] under the seat and a small key switch mounted in front
of the door hinges...
I had this in MY type 3 variant many years ago, just I didn't have to lock the car all the time..

Locksmiths have atool to cut keys from the lock.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Usually you can take the lock cylinder apart and swap/file the little flat bronze things to suit a key. I did this on all the locks on my splitty as
I was in the same boat. Managed to get the drivers, cargo and rear hatch on the same key!
I also find a paddle pop works in worn locks too!

I have 2 different length keys! 1 long one which does the doors and i think the boot and the short one for the ignition! is that normal?

If you are replacing door handle on your car just take the barrels out of your old handles put them in the new ones. I did this on monday for my

Swap the cylinders or take the locks and the key you want to work to a locksmith and they will change the locks for you...
Im was a Locksmith in a past life, so you could bring them around to Rob's sometime and we'll change them...
No such thing as tool to cut keys to them...the internal brass wafers get changed to fit the key...filing them will just mean more keys can work them,
thats when paddle pop sticks start to work and any Kombi key.

or Eat the paddle pop & use the stick..??
interesting about filing the wafers in the locks..
I might have a fiddle one day... see if I can use one key instead of 4... in My Beetle...
Usually , the one key does everything...
how far back this technology went, I'm NOT sure..!!!

EVEN BACK THEN TECHNOLOGY WAS A LITTLE ADVANCED AND USUALLY YOU HAD ONE KEY TO FIT YOUR CAR AND I HAD ONE TO FIT MINE AND THEY DIDNT WORK EACHOTHERS,
however if you file the wafers anyones key will work...simple really, and worn locks mean the wafers are worn and paddlepop sticks will work...
