Std shifter sloppy and vibrates

The std shifter in the notch is very sloppy and vibrates quite a bit. I've had it out and greased it up but there must be some bushes somewhere.
It sounds like the rod through the tunnel is vibrating.
Haven't had a chance to look yet but after some hints so I can have a look this weekend.

Cheers

Assuming that the tranny is ok, the problem is most likely in one of two places, either the shift rod bush or the shift coupler. It is not a difficult job, but will take some time. I would suggest that you buy a new shift rod bush and a new coupler before you even start as it's almost certain that this is the problem. They are fairly cheap and available from any of the forum sponsors. And as you have to get to the coupler to remove the bush, you might as well do both.

The shift rod bush is a plastic bush which the shift rod slides through. If you haven't replaced it in the last few years, it's virtually gauranteed to be split or missing. It is located under the shift lever mounting plate, but can only be removed once the shift rod is removed.

The coupler is a the rear of the car and over time the holes in the rubber inserts enlarge causing a sloppy feel. I hav ejust replaced mine with new urethane inserts.

The Bentley manual explains how to remove the shift rod, if you don't have one I can give you instructions how to change both these items.
