Any tips on fitting 1600 to beetle and split
In the process of installing a 1600 into my beetle (and my
split), as i need to grind down the inner bell housing of the
gearbox i was wondering if any of you guys or girls know the
easiest way to do this without lifting it back in uncountable
times????

go to super cheap and buy a die grinder. does short work of it. do not use a grinder as the magnesium in the gearbox can ignite and whoosh, youv'e
lost your split or beetle. either that or just put it in and it will wear away the housing its'self over a couple of days. cheers, fish

Yes, I read where a fellow in the US.. just used His starter motor to cut it out... just did the bolts up a bit at a time..
the ring gear makes short work of it...
My Son used an angle grinder...

just be carefull as the grinding stuff is verry fine and can ignite with a white flsh. try throwing some on a fire and see. whoosh it's gone.

Hey Ross, why don't you just use a 6v flywheel instead of messing around? Its not just clearing the bellhousing, the start gear is different because
of teh different number of teeth on the flywheel
