Yep they do own them all and some more specialist firms.

Some of the recent extreme VW models are little more than test beds for Bently and Bugatti. (Passat W12 and Phaeton.)

Yes VW do own them all. The question is, why??

SEAT makes a lot of money for VW in Spain, and Skoda are also selling very well. But how much money can VW make from three dead, or almost dead, luxury brands??

No new Bugattis have been sold for decades. Several previous owners have tried to resurrect the great French marque from the 1930s, but each has ended in failure. VW picked up the marque relatively cheaply but it will take mega $$$ to start the brand from scratch.

Now Bentley might be doing better but VW really wanted Rolls Royce and missed out. Now they have a marque that has been nothing but tarted up Rolls Royces for 50 years - real Bentleys haven't been made since the 1930s. Once again, VW must start pretty much from scratch.

Same with Lamborghini. At least they made handfuls of great cars in the 1960s, '70s and '80s before going bankrupt several times under different owners (VW bought them from a Singapore-based consortium who had gone broke trying to run the company). The Diablo is now out of date compared with the latest Porsches and Ferraris, so VW has to start again.

I always thought VW should have bought Subaru instead of poncing around with these luxury wanker brands. At least the Subaru engine is a distant relative of our familiar favourite.

What other dead luxury brands could VW buy and try to resuscitate? Auburn? Duesenberg? Horch? Wanderer? Wolesley? Cord? Packard? Tucker? They make about the same amount of sense.

Meanwhile, the Golf and Polo fall further behind their competitors.

That's funny 'casue if you look at my posts on the Rolls Royce poll I spelt it with an E... but so many others were spelling it without an E and I have no confidence in my spelling that I decided I must be wrong :D

Phil74Camper: I think you are spot on and a lot of people agree.

Funny thing in the Uk they can't sell many Seats or any Skodas.
