Porsche gearbox into Kombi

I was just curious if anyone has ideas on putting a porsche 5 speed into a 76 kombi. I have put some 17" wheels on with 215/45 tyres and now it revs its butt off at freeway speeds and I would like to get them back down.

Putting the right size tyres on would be much more cost effective and if this the rob i think it is I would be more concerned about fixing the clutch from hell first.

Shiftyvw, Is that you Owen? Not a thing wrong with the clutch, now that it is standard!!

I can't put a higher profile tyre on as to do this would cause interferance with the adjusters on the rear spring plates for the adjustable suspension.

I think the auto gearbox overall final gear ratio is higher than that of the manual, this would be why your auto didn't seem to rev as hard.

So any other ideas for gearboxes??

Try an Albins custom 4th gear to drop the revs in your kombi box

Which gearbox are you running? The 2 litre box has better ratios for your purposes than the 1700/1800 versions.

Owen, You have beem listening to Shimo to much!! Every time I turn up he says the same thing.

I have a 2 litre gearbox but the revs are still on the high side, but the revs are still too high. Changing up to 45 series instead of the previous 40's helped but not enough.

With 215 x 45 x17 tyres I estimate that the overall tyre diameter is 5% less than stock. So I agree with ShiftyVW - get different tyres before changing the gearbox.

You can play around with tyre dimensions on http://www.aussiekombicampers.com/projects_bbw.shtml
