Braking woes


Hi all, and merry x-mas,

I was driving down Arden St. the other day ( go the roos) when I heard a cluncking noise in the left rear of my bug and the brake pedal strted jumping all over the shop. I thought the brake shoe might have worked itself loose.Anyhoo, when i finally got home and removed the rear drum i was amazed to see that the primary shoe lining had come right off the shoe?. I find this a bit concerning as i replaced the shoes about 7 months ago and still had about 80 % lining left. I also drive fairly sedately. Has anyone else had this experience as it has scared the crap out of me, if i was travelling at freeway speeds i would have been rooted. I also cannot remember the brand of brake shoes (i think they were brazilian) but ill definetly be buying a german brand next time.

Scarey!


Assuming the lining was glued on I'd say the glue was very bad quality.
A good argument here for using a brake specialist to re-line your shoes rather than a shop change over!

Brakes?


Howdy,

I rang around and couldnt find any shops open today that sell original german shoes. Everyone seems to have them as an exchange for re-lined ones. Can anyone recommend a good shop in Melbourne for relining shoes? im no expert but it all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

The last ones I did were relined by Tucker Road Motors in North Road. I think they just send the old shoes of to Bendix in Clayton for relining. Takes about a day.
Hard to buy new drum brake shoes off the shelf these days.
I have a set of rivet on shoes for a early beetle if you fancy re-riveting the shoes on your self. The really old way of doing it.;)
