clutch problems?

I have a 62 beetle and have a problem with the clutch

sometimes it works fine other times it grinds into gears not all of them it weird
also sometimes shudders when taking off

I replaced the bowden tube and clutch cable which helped for a bit now its doing it again
sometimes you push clutch in and it grinds into 1 st so I put it into 3rd and move it a bit then it will go into 1 st no problem
could it be?
marcel
broken clutch tube inside pan (please no!)
pressure plate/ throwout bearing
worn front engine mount

anyone had similar problems?

Grinding on the change from 3rd to 2nd is probably just the synchro's gone. My car does that. Quick fix is to double clutch it.

no its not the syncro as it only does it here and there
I read the manual and it said it could be the bowden tube if that doesnt have enought bend in it
or a buggered front mount

syncros going doesnt make it grind all the time syncros help u change into gears that the revs arent really appropriate for so when u try to change into a gear that it doesnt like it grinds because the revs arent right but if u change pretty well with the revs for that gear it wont grind or wont grind as much. having said that i have noticed a short grinding noise sometimes changing up gears in my 62, pretty rare that it happens but every now and then. i do get clutch shudder though if i try to take off quick. keep us posted if u find the cause.

My 63 shudders a bit when it takes off if i dump the cluctch and there is traction. Check your bowden tube to see if you have at least 1.5" sag in it, sloppy engine mounts wont help either. Have a peek under the car and see if the clutch tube isnt broken too. give it a good wiggle to see if its tight.

Although it could also be that the chassis is just tired, it isnt uncommon on cars that are 40+ years old.

My response was to reverend only. His problem sounds similar to mine. I can't change down from third to second without grinding unless i'm going extremely slowly.

the shudder could be oil on the clutch plate or it could also be that you have a solid plate clutch. the solid plate clutch is the older style which doesnt have the spring set up like the new ones to take up the tension slowly i.e they give about half an inch in twist.
