On the bottom of the casting (where the carb bolts down) it should have the size and idf/ida/dcnf etc, there are a lot of types, if you can post a pic
we can identify it..

For what it's worth, my webers gave me 1 hp more than my Kadrons, but gave me most of that power over a greater rev range, rather than the Kadrons
having (almost) the same peak power but only for a small rev range. It made the car feel faster and more responsive. The down side is I'm at the
moment using a RIDICULOUS amount of fuel. I have to sort that out. They cost me around $700, but were newer than these.

I paid $800.00 for mine , they were all serviced * glass blast* c/w new kits, they had new K&N air cleaners fitted .
I would say a fare price for what you have there would be $400.00 > $450.00

Check the throttle shafts, old carbs wear between the body and the throttle shaft, if you have an airleak there they will constantly fall out of tune.
To get them rebushed can cost more than the carbs are worth... If you have any lateral movement around there I would give it a miss.
The numbers after 40idf relate to themodel of idf. They had different circuits and emulsion tube set ups dependant on what they were originally on.
Some will run better than others on a VW .
