can you acid wash ???


an engine. I'm only wanting to clean the exterior of the engine with HCL so i can paint it and get rid of old oil and muck.
has anyone done it at home with Hydrochloric acid HCL

Hmm, acid and aluminium will make a nice explosive gas. Don't use the acid too concentrated (der!).

Uh, I don't know man, is it a really important engine? I'd make sure I didn't get any inside 'n' stuff.

becareful..... is it a case with magnesium in it..... if i remember correctly Hydrocloric acid and magnesium = Hydrogen = BOOM

You would be better off wiping it down with a solution of Caustic or Baking soda from the kitchen but wash it off good as it keeps on working

sodium hydroxide + Aluminium = hydrogen also........i would be very careful doing this. if do go ahead with it i would do it in a very well ventilated area. hydrogen is fine as long as there is no ignition.......its the ignition thats the problem lol:P

Why do you want to paint the engine case ///// it will only keep the heat in and not allow it to cool properly.

Clean all the crud off yes but dont paint the case.

hmm cast iron, the acid will still etch into it, try kero and scrubbin brish.... but i wouldnt use acid...... cheers
