009 Rotor Button..Which one?
Does anyone know the part number for a Bosch 009 distributor rotor button.
I had the new 2110 engine ready to start yesterday. Went to fit the old rotor button off the old vacume advance distributor and found that the shaft
size on the 009 is larger. I got the Sh*ts, closed the garage door and went upstairs to the couch for the rest of the afternoon.
Old dizzy = 12.9mm Part number 114 905 205 2
009 dizzy = 14.3mm Part number 0 231 178 009

Hi
Im pretty sure that it would use a GB782, which also fits some other VWs + Alfas, Audi, BMW Cortinas 4cly Toranas & Mercs so you shouldn't have
trouble getting one. The other dizzy you have is most likely an Aussie dizzy which uses a shallow cap and 2 piece points.

Thanks Steve,
The old points are 2 piece and the cap was a short one.
Jak and Paul were around to witness the first startup and we all went away unfulfilled.
This weekend!

lookin at my bosch book now if its not a gb524 then its a gb782. the rotors change over the years back and forth.......well those are the rotors
listed for the beetle dizzys....
they look mostly the same, the difference is......
gb524 is fairly flat across the top of the rotor, one side to the other
gb782 has a gap on one side of the rotor, the side opposite to the contact.
this gap is more a channel in the plastic.........
thats all i can tell from the pics in me book really........
hope that helps man.............
everything dies baby, thats a fact..

Steve,
Jak had a spare but it was the small size one.
I told him he should chuck his whole engine out and replace it after that poor effort.:thumb

Airfooled,
Thanks for the reply. The old rotor part number is 1 234 332 082.
It is too short anyway for the cap of the 009.
Sounds like the GB782 is the go.

Hi Brendan
Was that the 009 rotor part number or the old dizzy part number rotor? Because my book says that part number is a GB524 which is for a short cap.
I built a motor once for a freinds nephew and I fitted a rotor from a Kombi which had a RPM limiter, good insurance.

Do You know that VW rotor buttons have a resistor between the centre and outer piece... this can burn out and leave You stranded...
I bought from the US a rotor button without the resistor...
very expensive but at least it cannot burn out...
I thought all You people would carry a spare rotor, points, dizzy cap and condenser.... If You carry them, You most probably will never need them..
in an emergency... that is..
Maybe its because I'm 330kms from Sydney that I carry so many spare bits..

Rather than buying a resistorless rotor, you can dig out the resistor (fun) thats buried in epoxy, then replace it with a bit of copper soldered
between the contacts and re epoxy it.

Steve,
The part number was for the old rotor button. I'm not going to bother with a rev limiter as this dizzy is only staying in until the motor is run in
and the carbies are tuned. I have a '86 magna dizzy turned up ready to go, along with a Jaycar programmable curve HEI ignition (you gave me the
details on the magna dizzy in this forum some time ago). The 009 along with a mech fuel pump will become emergency spares under the rear seat.
Adrian,
Are you suggesting that I make modifications to my VW that were'nt intended by the manufacturer
Brendan
