Need advice about 73 pop top

I'm desperate for advice! I've got a 73 4-cylinder pop top with a dead motor and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. There's not too much cancer in the body (in usual spots, around windows) and only one ding in the right centre panel. Have done the internal panels myself in sexy sexy sexy purple crushed velvet (yeah baby!). It's got no cupboards or sinks or anything like that, but seats are in good condition with rear seatbelts intact and has a near-new pop-top. We were heading off for holidays last week, got 60 k's down the road and the motor suddenly overheated, smoke pouring everywhere and now has zilch compression. So I figure I need to either a) get the motor fixed b) put 2nd hand motor in it c) put re-conned motor in it or d) get rid of it and get new Kombi cause it's not worth the $. How do i know how much $ is reasonable to spend if the mechanic has a look and says it needs new pistons etc? I haven't had it towed there yet, but have rung up and the various pricing is scaring me. They're saying minimum $2300. I'm happy to spend up to $1500 on it but probably not much more. It cost me $2000 14 months ago. *sigh* And all this when I've been given 2 weeks notice to move house, too!

We drive her like she's our baby - I promise! We always just laugh when people get impatient with us for going slow. Whadda they expect? We'd checked the oil the day before we set out and have always been really good about that. We had no problems driving to Townsville last year even in hot weather - just stopped for a break every 1 1/2 - 2 hours to rest her and didn't drive in the middle of the day. Always used good oil too - people seem mystified by the sudden death. As for extinguisher - yes we do have one believe it or not! We're both a bit anal retentive really, being hospital workers. Thanks for the encouragement, I hope someone magically comes up with an affordable answer for me! I do love her :(

I had a similar situation occur to me, i bought the vehicle, drove it home and then lived thru a battering of problems ending with the heads(?) i dunno, something that there are 4 of and i broke 2 of them, then a few months later, broke the other two. The van lost power all of a sudden, smoked, and died outside the mechanics house.it cost me thousands but i perservered and now have had trouble free driving for nearly 3 yrs. In the end i decided to stick with it and work thru the repairs as then i knew i had "my" car, ie a van that i was driving, not driving someone elses problems. so i began from scratch and drove this "new" engine at speeds i felt she could handle (80kph) enjoying the view knowing if anything was to go wrong, it was my fault. i now have a "feel" for her and know when she's feeling off colour, so get things looked at. like you i drive and rest both me and the van every few hours,.the only thing i have added (she's a stock standard 1800) is an oil pressure gauge.
so my rather long winded tale is, from my experience, if you can afford it, stick with it, cause there is light at the end of the tunnel, as for how much is a good price, i can't help you i'm afraid as i'm about as handy as an ashtray on a motor bike when it comes to mechanics...my most sophisticated tool is a claw hammer.
regards ned

i plan to live forever.....so far so good.

I think of it like this... You see plenty of good Kombis for sale for aroung $5000-$6000. If it only cost you 2K and you spend another 3K will you have a car that is as nice as one of these? I think you will, and you will know the car much better after you fix it, having been driving it for a while now...
