Gearbox and engine identification

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the 1800 and 2ltr gearboxes in the bay window kombis. I've heard that the 2 litre boxes have the 6 ribs, are the 1800's the same???

Also, I've heard that the difference between the 1800 and 2ltr engines is only the bore size, is this correct??????? How can I tell otherwise?

Thanks.

Ross.

2 Litre gearboxes are totaly different to the 1800 box, different gears, 6 rib housing, bigger bellhousing, etc etc.

The engines are different too, 2ltr has a bigger bore than the 1800, (94mm vs 93mm) and longer stroke (71mm vs 66mm) the 2ltr has smaller valves than the 1800. Conrods are also different.

Engine number starting with AP is an 1800, CJ is 2ltr, GD is fuel injected 2 ltr.

Thanks Dave, the box I'm looking at has the 6 ribs, is that a 2 litre only thing. I know the older 1600 boxes only have about 4 ribs, are the 1800's the same as that?

Is there any way I can tell the engines apart just by looking at them? Do they have different engine no. prefixes that tell them apart?

Thanks.
Ross.
