Tried to do some flames for the first time

Ok I’m no artist and I’m no painter, but what I am is a guy who will have a go at something to say I did it. So please don’t criticize my bodgy home job. This is my very first attempt at doing flames so these will come off for bigger ones as I think these don’t suit the bus

Step 1 was to find some flames on the net I did and converted them to eps file format then made them larger so they fit onto an A3 size page, printed it on A4 paper then stuck them together and cut them out (this is my flame template). That solved my artistic problem I didn’t have to freehand draw flames on the bus.
Cost so far $0.00

I went to the paint shop got some thin blue tape the type you use for flaming, cost $10.00
Positioned the flame template on the car with double sided tape and masked around the flames. Removed the template this is what was left

After preparing the car for painting I masked around the flames and painted it with$2.95 cans of paint X3
Cost of paint $8.85

This is what I got

Total cost under $20.00

i think they look pretty cool......in fact i liked the look of the black bus with the blue and white flames (with the template and the masking in place)

Looks good for a home job Ron! My only suggestion now would be to put a thin pistripe on the edges.

Very good.
Good on ya for giving it a go.
Even with our bus I had to get an artist friend to draw the flames.

Good effort for a man on a budget. Flames are a pain to do.

Looks good! Always satisfying when you do something yourself.

Here is my first effort for flames:

I looked through hot rod mags to get ideas for designs, then drew them on cardboard before transferring it onto the shroud to mask up. I started to do a pinstripe but was crap at it so quickly wiped it off. If I do flames on a car body, I'll pay someone to do the pinstriping as I found it quite tough!

Definitley the masking up that takes the most time. It took me 6 hours to mask the flames on the Helbus, and 15 minutes to put the colour on. Then it took about 30 minutes to unmask. Then I had two hours of clearcoat to do over the whole bus.

I am unsure of brand Adam, I spent around $25 on the one brush from Brisbane Refinish Supplies (a dagger liner - don't know if it was good or crap) - I think it was more the operator that was the problem rather than the brush itself!
