and

(sorry germanlook site doesn't want to link- so you'll have to visit it and look under features for the Porsche vs VW article)

Maybe not the fastest but inspirational if you have bottomless pockets!!

The fastest one that I know of is a UK bug, http://www.centralvwaudi.com/Russ_Fellows.htm  Hope this helps.

There is also a supercharged type 4 powered open wheeler that has 500HP, runs on methanol and holds every record in the known and unknown universe :P

Good question...............would be interesting to see how many performance T4 motors are out there.

That UK car has Twin plugs!!

Cam, I guess your talking about Peter Gumley's Hillclimb car?

Hey down here in NZ there is a 2.8L T4 in a roundy roundy type car, I think he does about 150mph down the back straight at pukekohe. Around 200 hp at the rear wheels, dry sumped completely race carred up. He has run a 1/4 in 12 ish seconds.

The other ones I know of are in midgets running a roller cam set up, methanol making 320 Hp - and theres more to come...:thumb

We seem to have an abundance of T4 street cars too, when you consider the size of the performance VW market here. I know of two 2.5 ish litres being built and another couple already on the road.

I should be at a track day with the roundy car in about a month, Ill post some photos -- the best thing about the car is he is running IDA's !!!. There was a post on here somewhere about the NZ nationals, there were some photos of one of the street driven beasties in that post (sorry cant remember where).

The other interesting thing about the car is it is using a Subaru LSD in a T1 box !!

Hi
I have 2 type 4 powered cars.

The first is a beetle with a 140 kw 2.7 L engine (normaly aspirated) and has never been to the strip. It is faster than a new BMW M3 over 800m. I use it regularly to drive to work and back.

The second is a dragster with a turbo charged 2000cc type 4 (325kw/ 440Hp). Best times in the drag rail is 11.12 @ 221Km/h with major traction problems. The same engine in my 1963 drag beetle did 12.2@ 192Km/h on street radials.

I am in South Africa at the moment but might soon be moving to WA. (180km from Perth)

Will be shipping the engines over when I move.

thanx Hermann

Head design, particularly exhaust port orientation seems to be the biggest restriction of a type IV. Jake Raby ( http://www.aircooledtechnology.com ) I think is working on a new head design to overcome the problems so who knows what they will be capable of?

I think the general consensus on shoptalkforums is that it is difficult to seal the Type 4 heads for forced induction with larger cylinders and also the exhaust issue.

Okay i'll throw this one in .

Say you have both a T1 1600 and a 1800 T4 motor. You also have $5,000 to spend on it. Your after the best street motor for your money. forget anything else .like gearboxes etc , just motor. germans love um and do wonderful things to them , makes you wonder why they aren't more used.

One final one! What stroker size is best to aim for on a T4 and whats out there?

dan;)

I certainly wouldn't be throwing $5000 at the 1600T1, nor the 1800T4 for that matter :blush

New Al case and internals for a T1 - that's a whole different ball game.

Everyone will tell you that T1 parts are way cheaper than T4 parts. And T4s don't require as much maintenance. So there are plus and minuses for both sides.

But for $5000 you will get way more T1 engine than a T4 one.

Does that make sense?

you could probably do a stroker T1 for that $$$. Get a lot of power and have room for more with head upgrades etc. Also easier to do the exhaust, more people have done it so there is less guesswork and it bolts straight in.

I'll guess that for that money you could get about a 2L type 4. Wont make as much peak power as the T1, but would probably have a fatter powerband. The aluminium cases for the T1 aren't as good as the stock T4 case.

I think the advantages of the T4 are lots of little improvements, not just the case material but a proper mounting system between flywheel and crank (instead of those pissy little dowels). Factory oil filter, better pushrod tube seal, pushrod tubes and lifters you can pull out without taking the heads off. The case halves are held together with bolts, which gives the main bearings better support. More oil capacity, more cooling fin surface area, cross flow head design. What this means to me is less maintainence and f'ing around when its done and more driving :) And they have been designed to drive 1.5 tonne kombis up hills in the summer :)

From what i've read on www.shoptalkforums.com any stroke longer than 78 requires a lot of work on a type 4 (71 being stock for 2L and 66 for 1.7 & 1.8L). Also T4 stroker cranks are hard to get, so you'd usually be getting a welded one. There are one piece 4340 chromoly forged ones on www.aircooled.net but they are about $1200 US each!

PS a Type 4 in your notchback with phone dials would be awesome!

Today i was chatting with a mate about T4 motors , pro's and cons etc. He has ran a pretty standard but bored out motor T4 and was really happy with it in the back of his bug.. Said it was around 2.4 in size with 45's and a little headwork and other minor mods. This was hooked up to a 5 speed box. Basically C/R 1-4 and 5th being highway use.
In trying to explain the difference between T4 and T1 he put it in terms that any VW nut would understand.
His words " You have a golf GTI and a VR6. Both roughly as quick as eachother but it's how it gets there , the power delivery and how hard the engine's working , revving out to.
Now not knowing over to much about motors having driven both cars i know exactly what he was on about.
Have to say that i'm interested in building a nice T4 motor and would be interested as others to know about hot T4 motored Vw's prowling around.

Cheers Dan;)
