Type 3 Auto Servicing
Anyone out there with a type 3 service manual?
I was wondering what oil to put in a type 3 Auto ('73)?
I went to buy some ATF oil and never realised how many different ATF's there are to choose from. Also how often should it be replaced? Is there a
filter in there? Any other maintenance to do to and Auto gear box (other than fixing the leaks)?
Also what is the ignition timing + dwell and valve gap? (1600 dual carb motor).
I have a beetle manual, but not sure if it's all the same?
Cheers,
Richard

Hey,
Monday will be fine. Just post or U2U numbers will be enough though. I don't have fax at home, and only in at work occasionally at the moment.
I'll keep my eye's open for a cheap manual in the future, but this will get me going.
Oh, long term I plan for this to be a donor for a trike (if I ever get to it), but will keep it on the road for now as a run around car.
Other that the usual type 3 rust it's in reasonable condition.

Sweet, now your cooking.
So If I want to build my own frame around a complete rear end, do you have/sell an "approved" frame design to make registration easy? (in QLD)
Also do you sell "kit's" for guards/seats etc? I am no good a fibreglass work.
You can U2U details if you like.
Cheers,
Richard.
PS The type 3 I just bought drives too nice to chop up though, might need to get another :-)

ATF = Dexron , you would be best to remove the pain and clean the filter out , replace the gasket they leak , also get the cover ( dust cover off the
top of the trans and clean the breathers if these are blocked the trans sees pressure and the oil is forced out the seals >I have allways fitted
two seals in the imput shaft this seams to stop the leakfrom there .
if you remove the unit drain the converter to get all the shity oil out .
I can try to copy the manual its thick & i dont wish to brake its binder .

Thanks Mate.
I bought some Castrol "transmax M" which supersedes Dexron II apparently. Sounds like the right stuff.
Thanks for the hint on dropping the pan, should be an easy job, I'll pick up a new gasket also. Is the filter just a washable gauze or repacable
item?
I'll look for the breather on top also and see what I find.
By "remove the unit" you mean if I pull the motor/GB out dont you? I don't plan to do this any time soon. So is the oil in the torque conveter
replacable also?? It's separate to the GB oil isn't it?? Getting confused (easily done) The oil in there currently looks very clean, so can't be
too bad.
I'll slowly try to eliminate the oil leaks, so the don't know if the shaft seal leaks yet, there's so much oil under there :-)
NO NEED to copy manual, I will get one soon I'm sure, I'll start asking around, thanks for the offer though.
Thanks again for your time
Richard

The correct ATF is Dexron III. The fluid in the torque converter is not separate as far as I know, it just won't drain out when you remove the pan.
It will mix with the new fluid when the tranny is running.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

Valve clearance is same as Beetle 6 thou (0.15mm)
Dwell I'll check tonight and timing depends on the distributor you have. Is it a 009 or an original dual advance?
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

Thanks again purpleT3.
Not sure on the number on the dissy yet, but it has vac advance, so isn't a 009. Everything looks very stock in there. I have a 009 I could fit on
though :-)
