gutless 1800

hi all i have a 1800typ4 motor in my kombi that is guttless!! and uses heaps of fuel i purchesed it two years ago it run crap so i put new rings and new amc heads on it ,it still run crap (much slower than the stock 1600 i had in my bus before) i thought it must just be the 40 dcn webers i was running so recentley i replaced them with some stock rebuilt carbs now it runs the same only slightly smoother and a bit less top end, compresion is 120 in all pots'new coil, extracters, leads, burns no oil.
any one got any idea??? i had a 1800 with cracked heads in my old bus and it went twice as hard and used half the fuel
thanks

hey man, i had the same problemo, jack it up so both back wheels are orf the ground, out of gear, how tight is the box, if it dont run freely there is your promlemo, my gearbox oil was that thick it was sticky, probably been in there for 35 years, so i slowley drained it, put the bung back in, then filled it with kerosene, put the bung in went and did 20 - 30 klms draind it again, added more kero (filled it right to the top) did another 20 - 30 klms and hey presto my box was as loose a a hookers cr#%&, it went twice as hard after that and used less fuel, i was soo happy but quite shocked as i never heard off it before, hope this is your problem.. easy to fix but be sure to buy a 20 ltr drum off kero

Sounds like you've looked at most things, but are the carbs definitely setup correctly?
Might need to find some one with and O2 meter, and something to balance the carbs correctly with.
The rest sounds in order though.
Maybe try a stock exhaust also.
Oh, did you fit 2L or 1800 AMC heads? They have different valve sizes.

Just a note, 120psi on all is fine for a stock type 4, but I'd expect a little higher with new rings. (it won't be you problem though). Have you done a "leak down test"??

I used neat kero, went for a drive then drained it, then repeated it, when kero was in the box it leaked a little, but when new box oil was returned no leaks were found, hope this helps

A 009 dissy if timed correctly might give flat spots, but will not cause it to be gutless.
What do you time the 009 to?

Do you get good fuel pressure? Is the fue lfilter blocked?
Just another guess.

Try taking off the spark plugs leads one at a time while the engine's running. There should be a noticeable drop in revs when each lead is removed. I found that I had a big leak in the manifold using this method - removing the lead to that cylinder made no difference to the revs!

Has the cam shaft and lifters ever been replaced, did you check the wear in the lifters when you did the top end rebuild? T4 cam and lifters should be replaced while doing a rebuild, they do wear out.
Just a thought.
