L bug front calipers
Hi all just trying to put new front pads in the L bug. I have removed the caliper from the car and then i have removed the old pads, they needed to be
slid to the middle of eht caliper and then fall out. But the new pads are to thick to go back in the same way!!!
do i need to put the caliper in 2 pieces to get it in? but if i do this I will break the seals?
all help would be great, as i need the car for tommorrow and one pad only has 1mm left on it.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

You dont have to remove the caliper to install new pads, note there are 2 or 1 pins at the top of the caliper just punch these out with a small pin
punch then the pads will slide out
Get a small crow bar or large screw driver and lever between the disc and the caliper piston to push teh piston back into the caliper enough so
you can slip the new pad into place and re fit the holding pins

I have the ones with a u shaped pin, i have taken it out, but the pads are to big to fit through here by large margin. I looked at doing it that way
first. I don't have a picture of my caplipers in any of my manuals.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Hi
The L bug calipers need to removed to fit pads, you will need to push the pistons back with a special tool to fit the new pads.

I have the piston back. is the tool to fit the pads? the pads just won't physically fit into the capliper without splitting the caliper in 2

Hi
Dont split them, that's asking for trouble. The piston needs to go back further. The tool is like 2 pads with a screw thread attached, you should
be able to get them from Super cheap etc. Maybe the pads where made to thick?

I don't know, I will have to ake them back to the store tommrow and ask them, I need to get some new ones in over the next few days before i hit the
track again. thanks for the help.

Actually the L bug calipers are a pain the arse, why not in the future look for some pre 72 Type 3 calipers, twin pin with larger piston than a
Beetle but still use Beetle pads.

Only the pre 72 ones bolt on, they use 10 mm bolts, the later ones use 12 mm bolts.
Your pads look like these.

The early Type 3s look like this
