please help with timing (advance/retarding)
hi guys
ive just recenltly had a whole heap of trouble with my a bad set of points in my 1800 kombie (which ive posted here). however when i picked up my car
from the mechanics with the new points it was pinging really badly. so i took i back and its been retarted from 10 to 0 (or TDC i guess?) now ive had
the same tank of petrol in the car so im trying to rule out fuel....
basically im wondering even though my car is running sluggish at 0 (10 degrees retarded from the machenics standard set-up). is there any problems
with doing this??
im concerned about the heat from this, and also because i have to really plant my foot down to get up hill. also it seems to be missing a bit when i
give alot of gas (some small amount of flooding??)
whithout the petrol factor, what else could cause a car to start pinging so badly after changing the points???
also when i picked up my car, one of the chokes was stuck on....
jeez im starting to hate machenics!!!

Changing points will change the timing of course going from a badly worn set to a new set will advance it quite a bit...
The problem seems to be you have a non-VW mechanic, in which case he probably doesn't know how to set the timing correctly and is just guessing. I
don't know the correct setting for a type 4, I'm a type 1 guy myself, but I'm sure you'll find someone here who can help.

Many people on this forum use Premium unleaded in their type 4 engines.. stops the pinging and the engine runs better.. maybe 50/50 would also stop
the pinging.. and overheating etc...
I don't know much about type 4s either...
