HEI system kit
has anyone built / has used / is using the HEI (high energy ignition) kit from Dick Smith / Jaycar etc
Im thinking of trying one with the Pertronix kit

Is that one a later incarnation of the old "Transistor Assisted Ignition" with dwell extension?
If so, I have been using these ignitions for many trouble free years on various cars.
However, the circuit provides about 1/2 an amp of "wetting" current for the points. This is to give the points something to do and to keep them
clean of oil fumes and built up grunge.
This wetting current, can mess with your pointsless ignition output (as it did with mine) and cause either a failure of the triggerhead or very bad
misfiring as the battery voltage rises.
There are a set of three resistors on the curcuit board just in front of the points wire connection point.
Just remove 2 of these and the system will run fine.
Iffen you ever go back to points dun forget to resolder these resistors or oil fumes and dust can eventually cause missfiring.

Very timely. I was about to put my Transistor Assisted Ignition back on my kombi after having problems with it. In the mean time I have put on a
pertronix and was wondering what effect that "wetting" current would have.
The problems I had with the Transistor Assisted Ignition were to do with misfiring. It initially went away when I changed to a new coil but then came
back after driving for several hours in warm weather. After scanning through the Silicon Chip magazine web site (it's their circuit) I suspect the
problem was the unit overheating. I'm going to reinstall it and see if this is the problem.

yeah the first one lasted 60 seconds and the second lasted 7 months then died but worked well when it was going
