Gearbox interchangability
I'm mid-way through a bit of a gearbox shuffle, and I wouldn't mind some words of wisdom from someone who's done it before.
I have a 2.0l engine in my '74 twin-cab, but it was fitted with an 1800 gearbox. The box is sick, so I've tracked down another 2.0l motor and 2.0l
box.
The 2.0l box looks different, as does the clutch and flywheel and starter motor. It seems to me that if I want to use the 2.0l box, I'll also have
to use the 2.0l flywheel, clutch and starter motor. Have I got that right ? Is there anything else that I'll need ?
The clutch release bearing on the 2.0l box looks a bit different too, but they look like they are pretty much interchangable. Is that right ?
Also the 2.0l box looks like its an inch or so longer. Does that mean that I also have to use the gear selecting rod that comes down from the front
of the car from the 2.0l car as well ?
Why is life so complicated ?

Ok a 2L flywheel with a 228mm clutch needs a 2L bell housing with 2 L starter motor. Or if you want to use a 215 of 210 mm flywheel on your 2L engine
then you can use a 1800 or 1700 bellhousing with a non 2L starter motor.
2L bell housing have a different clutch setup and use a different starter motor, All other 12v kombi's use the same starter ( manual's not Auto )
So if you want a complete 2L drivetrain then you need it all :>

Thanks for that. What about the release bearing and the operating rod ? Are they interchangable ?

I had an 1800 g'box in my kombi and recently changed it to a 2l. The 1800 had been bolted up to 2l bell housing etc so I didn't have to worry about
that when I did the changeover. However, the shorter 1800 g'box moved the gear stick closer to the dash - not a problem if you've got long arms, but
I'm glad it's back where it should be!
