Type 3 Distributor Woes


Hello again..

Apparantly the thing in my distributor wich the points bolt to (getting all technical here) is worn and loose, so i need a new distributor.

Now i already have a good feeling that i'm better off going to an electronic dizzy as i've had nothing but problems with points and timing etc.

I've heard alot about these "Bosch 009" Dizzy's and wanted to know... are they electronic?

Also, are these the best for my situation?

And, how much and where can i get one? Anyone got one they can sell me cheap?

This is on a stock type 3 1600 (1972 model)

The 009 dissy is mechanical.

Buy a new one as you might have the same problem using a S/H one there reasonably priced.

volksbahn in pendle hill in sydney have them 009s for $140+gst. i know it's not local to you but it should give you some idea, can't imagine places being much different on that price.

so what advantage does a 009 have over a standard VW dizzy?

The 009 debate has come up often before, so search the old posts to get some more info on 009 compared to stock. It often gets quite heated :thumb
The difference is 009 is mechanical only advance and stock for a type 3 is mechanical and vacuum advance (what model/year do you have?). With an otherwise stock motor, the stock distributor will probably be a little more drivable, though I've never used a 009 on a type 3 to compare.
Another thing to remember is the "electronics" you mention only replaces the points in the distributor, so if the distributor is cactus, a new electronic pick up will not fix the problem. Sure points can be a pain, but if maintained they are simple and reliable.;)
As for your problem, you need to know the the reason for the failure. As Dave said new may be best, but it will probably limit your choice to the 009, or pay big dollars for one. If you look for second hand, make sure you know what your looking for or it may be as bad as the one you have. That or buy from second hand from a trusted source.

None at all, they are used because they are a one size fits all and they are still being made. Original VW distributors are no longer made. 009s are poorer quality than the original units and have alot more variation in the advance curves between individual units.

You will probably find that a 009 on a 1600 will result in hesitation or a flat spot during acceleration. This can be tuned out by installing larger jets in your carbs or you can just live with it.

I have heard that the electronic points units are not all that reliable and can last as little as two years, but others may have first hand experience with these. I would say that your timing problems are a result of your worn dizzy and if you get it fixed or replace it the timing probs will disappear.

I ran a 009 on a T3. They run fine with the dual carbs on a T3. If you hate points run a pertronix or compufire points replacement module.

Generally a 009 will give you 22 degrees advance.

thing is the piccy you sent looks like a single vacuum dual advance dizzy. Like the one next to the t3 one in the piccy above. Its a lot deeper. I think the manual piccy you have and the t3 dizzy pictured are early ones as they are pure vacuum advance, no mechanical. The one in your car doesnt look like the piccy of the one in your manual.

If you get the numbers off the one you have I can prob still match it.

This dizzy seems in nice nick, screws good, threads good no chunks or straches in the lobes, vacuum can works smoothly.

funny you should say that, becuase when the motor was getting an overhaul, my mechanic sad that the motor has a beetle block, becuase it has a blocked off oil filler where it would be in a beetle... hmmm

take a wider view of the engine Jo, a make up mirror can be used to get the numbers could have a different one than standard. I think the t3 ones have the vacuum can in a different angle so it misses the generator
