How to run in a new motor..... ???

Guys, I'm just about ready to start driving the 73 daily. As it has brand new pistons, barrels, crank and bearings (ooh, and new heads too....) I dont want to destroy it from lack of knowledge on how to break in a motor.

Can anyone tell me what I have to do, and how long I have to do it for ?

Thanks is advance

Drive It!

Dont hold the revs constant.
Try and find a nice hilly road. Drive it HARD up the hill then take your foot off the accelerator so the engine backs off when you go down.
You need to get the engine hot to bed the rings in.

I was talking to Greg Ward the other day and he said the way he broke his engines in was to drive hard (but within limits ......) from Sydney to Bathurst - do a lap of Mt Panarama and back to Sydney angin.

Have fun fun fun with that new motor! :bounce

Very very very frequent oil changes

Don't "lug" it keep the revs up. Occasionally take it up to max revs but only for short bursts. Change the oil at say 50km then every 500km 2-3 times.

have u started it yet?

if so what u have to do first is break in the cam and lifters. When u first start the engine, let it run (in neutral) at about 3000 RPM or so. This ensures that the lifters and cam get plenty of lubrication, this stage is critical as it work hardens the lifter and cam together. If this step isn't taken then the lifters and cam will go soft and eventually u will have to take the whole thing apart to replace them both.

After that drive it constantly accelerating and decellerating to bed the rings into the piston lands. Do this for the first 300 miles or so, try not to keep it a a constant engine speed.

Change the oil often (and filter if u have one) until it is broken in, this will be signalled by a sudden drop in oil consumption. Keep track of oil consumption as u dont want ur fresh engine to run dry :)

it may take 50miles or 1000miles to break it in.

Prime and make sure you have OIL PRESSURE before you go much futher and actually fire the engine up.

Once its started ... bed the cam in by making sure the timing is right and then hold on 1500 to 2000 revs for at least 30 minutes...
allow to cool completely then do same again this will BED the cam and lifters in.

After about 500 miles or so change the oil and adjust the tappets while cold.

If you access to a fuel air ratio meter you can also check the mixture as this will enhance a smooth running engine.

Run em in the way you intend to drive em is my motto. Both the engines I have built got 15 mins of high idling with a few revs, just to burn my grotty finger prints off the exhaust. Then a drive from Wollongong to Oran Park to warm things up, then a days drag racing to bed things in. No signs of ill effects. Not sure that you would keep a warranty with this technique though. Just drive it as you normally would. Dont labour it. Dont rev it.

Oh and make sure its got oil in it. Not like someone I know.

oh yeah forgot about the priming bit :)

pull out the pressure sender, and crank over (with spark plugs removed to reduce load on bearings) until oil comes out of the sender hole. Replace the sender and turn over until light goes out. Put in sparkies and disconnect ignition and crank over until oil light is out (if it isnt already). connect up the ignition and let er rip!

if u have an external oil filter/cooler or any oil line that requires hoses, fill up the hoses/filter/cooler etc. with oil before you do all this, i learnt this the hard way :)

To help you get all this advice in perspective: The guys advising you to hold it at 2-3000rpm for twenty minutes are describing the cam run-in procedure, which must be done (but it sounds like you had the engine built for you - so it should already be done,) the suggestions of varying speed and driving hard are for the obsolete method of running an engine in - modern rings will bed themselves without a run-in procedure, but you may notice a little more oil usage and it's adviseable to change it more often for the first 5,000km; the advice to take it easy on the girl is good - for the first few thousand kays she'llbe producing a bit more heat as things bed in, being patient at this time will make her live a lot longer.

Oh, Yeah - going for a long drive at a constant speed is about the worst thing you can do to a fresh engine. Put a few hundred on her before you take on the Birdsville! :)
