The T-Bird system i have on it at the moment or as set of
cannons

opp's I should say why,

look at the pipes the cannons are different length's

and on the t-bird as you call it they are the same (or close anyway)

If you plan on driving for any distance you'll appreciate the quiet muffler on the thunderbird system

They look different lengths in the pic but it is just the way they are sitting

I have the problem with the thunder birds hitting my bar work all the time on the bar work, and they are slowly starting to crush where this is happening.
Just trying to work out if i will loose or gain anything if i use the cannons

He means the length of pipe from each cylinder. No's 1 & 3 have a shorter distance to travel than 2 & 4 on the cannons

baja type exhaust with standard heater boxes?


Sorry to hyjack the post but its almost the same topic.

Does anybody use a baja/buggy type exhaust with standard beetle heater boxes?, or knows of where I can get one, or an exhaust guy who can do a decent exhaust in Sydney. Cheers Clarkey.,

was talking to friend who just been thru same qu for a baja.

he wanted the headers from front cyl to go round side of head for max ground clearance. this discounted orig+heater boxes and discounted a 4->1 system he was offered 2nd hand.

also 4into1 system hanged out the back really limiting departure ange.

cannons had headers around side of head and made for real tight bend on the rear bar and max deoparture angle.
but they were loud,,, too loud..

to quiet down he got 2 aftermarket mufflers and replaced the exist cannons. so now its quiet as well as having good departire and clearance.

cannons are sposed to be less efficient than 4into1 but i dont know anything about this.

I run cannons. Thats not to say you have to of course. All about preference, as usual. Ians buggy runs a commodore exhaust through a single system and though it was quiet, I thought too quiet, at speed the tappet noise and wind noise was just as loud as my Baja at full speed. I missed the VW howl.

People say they (my system) is too loud but the Dog only growls real loud on heavy acceleration even though they are straight through. At speed (60kph & 100 kph) I can hold a normal conversation provided I'm not passing someone or going up hill.

The stereo downs out the drone on those 4 and 5 hour trips and the bass of the twin pipes soothes the Bronze tykes to sleep during those late night runs to and from the coast.

Note: I have run underlay down the inner firewall and side panels and have fairly packed parcel shelf area with tools, spares, pillows and knitted throw rug.

i have twin cannons and when i get my type 4 2 litre in they will be replaced by a 4 into 1 thunder bird extractors to a decent muffler system. as the cannons in my opinion have too little back pressure and are way to bloody loud.....i love the sound of my baja but sometimes the loudness really pisses me off......if i try to talk to someone while driving i end up with a sore throat and i have to have the stereo up real loud.....as well as the fact that moose mentioned the pipes are different lenths and i dont think its getting the best out of my engine..


i say find a way to stop the bar work contacting with the exhaust and stick with whats on there.

Again this is an opinion only but to me the cannons look the bollocks plus there's a lot less metal to rust, to me a priority with beach driving, and the noise is great- what's the saying -if it's too loud you're too old! As for whether it's better or not for the engine with one or the other I've heard all the arguments and I can see the points but in practice I've not noticed any great difference having used both the main difference has only really been that the cannons lasted longer.

i ditched the 4into1s i had cause they hung out the back like a pregnant cockroach. the twin cannons look better and allow a real good departure angle. i dont know any performance difference.

i had a home made cannon set up on my rally bug in the uk and it worked very well much better than some of the other systems i tryed... the engine was a fully worked 1776 and with the cannons the throttle respone was much better than a 4into1 system. loud hell yes had a sort of cackle when you hit the loud pedel, i loved it but to talk to the passenger you had to use the head set and intercom ... shite some times on a run i would have the headphones on just to kill the noise but it was never ment to ge a quite car, it was a race car and since when does noise come into it.....u can't really see in the pic where they come out but if you look just under the lights on each side u can see where they have hit and broken the fiberglass a few times :)


on another note i had a 4to1 set up on my 1835 and it worked much better than cannons did, all depends on the car/engine set ups.... and what you prefer...

Are you running a single carby or twins? If you're running twins you'll need to get a system that will clear the intake manifolds as some of the cannons are just for a single carby set up.

For what it's worth (and I'm no expert on this subject), most of the VW tuning doco I've read recommend 4-into-1 as the way to go for power, especially if combined with a stinger - in fact a mate of mine put my old stinger on his 1600 Formula Vee, and apparently got an extra 2-3 hp at the wheels on the dyno.

The question I have, however, is along similar lines to the start of this thread. I've got a 4-into-1 system on my offroad racing buggy, which used to have a stinger and which unfortunately now typically can't be used due to SA competition regs requiring a "muffler/spark arrestor". Does any know of a suitable unit, that would fit that description, but with minimal power reduction ?? - external noise shouldn't be an issue as regs state 95db at 30 metres, and internal noise shouldn't be a factor, given helmets and intercom.

Cannons for looks, sound (its just heaven with cannons and kadrons together !) and ground clearance.

4 into 1 if you want a quieter system. I cant really believe there would be much of a performance difference between the two systems on your average baja motor. Highly tuned motors would be different, but how many people run a screamer in their baja ?
